Publisher's summary

Over the years Dirk Pitt has always had a knack for finding trouble. This time it has found him.

The extraordinary new novel from the grand master of adventure and number-one New York Times best-selling author.

Pitt, the director of the National Underwater and Marine Agency, is on the Black Sea, helping to locate a lost Ottoman shipwreck, when he responds to an urgent Mayday - "under attack!" - from a nearby freighter. But when he and his colleague, Al Giordino, arrive, there is nobody there. Just dead bodies, a smell of sulfur in the air, and, as Pitt and Giordino explore, a blast from the stern that scuttles the ship swiftly, almost taking them with it.

The more the two of them search for the secret of the death ship, the deeper they descend into an extraordinary series of discoveries. A desperate attempt in 1917 to preserve the wealth and power of the Romanov Empire. A Cold War bomber lost with a deadly cargo. A brilliant developer of advanced drone technology on an unknown mission. Modern-day nuclear smugglers, determined Ukrainian rebels, a beautiful antiterrorism agent from Europol - all will combine to present Pitt with the most dangerous challenge of his career.

And not only Pitt. His two children, marine engineer Dirk and oceanographer Summer, are exploring a mysterious shipwreck of their own when they are catapulted into his orbit. The three of them are used to perilous situations - but this time they may have found their match.

Filled with breathtaking suspense and remarkable imagination, Odessa Sea is further proof that when it comes to adventure writing, nobody beats Clive Cussler.

Critic reviews

“The pages whip by as the characters, at least the good guys, survive one deadly encounter after another, and the bad guys get their comeuppances. Readers will anxiously await Dirk’s next adventure.” (Publishers Weekly)

“Sketch out some exotic, ephemeral settings, make every villain as nasty as possible, and it's another of Cussler's cinematic-style entertainments spinning out at hold-on-to-your-hat speed.” (Kirkus Reviews)

Good but not my favorite

Love Dirk and gang and Scott Brick is the best, but this was not my favorite. For me there was too much going on. Seemed splintered.

Another great Cussler!

action-adventure, suspense

Never met a Cussler novel I didn't love, and this one is no exception! Two parallel plots, one with Dirk and associates, the other with Summer and Dirk the younger make for classic nail-biting suspense. The only tidbit that I'll tease with is the part where Dirk comes out of a black powder cloud with a cutlass in his teeth to face off with a villain!
Scott Brick always does Cussler proud!

History keeps repeating in this series

I absolutely love the Dirt Pitt series and have literally been listening to a book a day up until this point. And up until this point (and maybe a book or two back) I had no complaints and was completely enthralled. What I don’t like about the recent story lines is that the same events keep happening and no one seems to learn from past mistakes. Characters keep getting abducted (and stored in large rooms together), NUMA ships keep getting hijacked, submersibles keep getting pushed around underwater and no one ever gets a call out??? Seriously??) dive sites keep getting over run by bad guys, and when bad things happen absolutely NO ONE gains situational awareness and make changes to their lives. The key characters keep walking around like bad things never happen and have never happened to Dirt Pitt and crew. Security never tightens, no one ever has a weapon and not one of them are able to put two and two together until it’s always… sigh… too late. It wasn’t like this in the first dozen or so books or if it did it wasn’t repeated from book to book.

It getting old and boring really darn quick!

To the current author: Your loyal readers know all the history. Your loyal readers might just like to see the crew in action and on top of the bad guys once in a while. You can still have bad things happen but change it up and use your creative mind. Don’t just let them finally get a clue at the end. I’m starting to believe NUMA crew members are the dumbest in the deep blue sea! After all the drama of the past it’s hard to believe no one carries a weapon or the boat doesn’t have them hidden on board. Or security cameras manned by personnel. It’s not the 1980’s anymore. Keep THAT in mind.

Great performance in audio from Cussler's story

Very entertaining story. The usual Cussler's twist and turns and Scott's narrative was great.
