Publisher's summary

The epic novel of espionage, betrayal and turbulence in 1960s Hong Kong by the #1 New York Times bestselling author and unparalleled master of historical fiction, James Clavell

Taking place over the course of an eventful week in 1963 Hong Kong, James Clavell’s Noble House is a masterfully woven novel of true suspense.

Ian Dunross, the current tai-pan of the illustrious yet financially troubled Struan empire, is racing to undo the damage his predecessor left behind and to once again stand on stable ground. And he’ll do whatever it takes—including striking a hard-fought deal with an American millionaire. But his rival, Quillan Gornt, has other plans. Suddenly caught in a dubious plot involving Soviet spies, Hong Kong’s criminal underground, and the hostile takeover of his company, Dunross holds nothing back in the fight for the Noble House.

Espionage, mayhem, and high-stakes betrayals make Noble House Clavell’s most prolific and imaginatively crafted narrative in the Asian Saga.

Poor narrator

This version is no where near as good as the one narrated by John Lee. Lister has no sense of the characters at all.

Chapters are out of order

Good book, a bit hard to enjoy when the audiobook chapters are out of order.

Awesome, though not clavell's best.

First of all, Shogun and Taipan are in a different league, in my opinion. With that in mind, I really enjoyed Noble House, as an exciting and interesting yarn. The characters and history create a sense of reality, although the timeline is pretty incredible. A great read, and a good listen. the reader took a chapter or two, but did well, especially with the multitude of both Asian and European voices.

It was hard to listen to tho I like the book...

I read the book many years ago and decided to give the audio book a whirl...I struggled to finish it this time around as I did not like the narration. It was just a bit off for me.

2nd time around

Noble house is a book that I read several years ago by listening on Audible. I decided that I wanted to listen to it again and I put in the time to do so. Overall it’s an enjoyable book. The performance was OK. Not great. The narrator was not as accomplished at doing various voices as some of the other narrators that I’ve listen to. James Clavell is my favorite author.

Good story bad reader

Ralph Lister reads too fast in a high pitched strident voice for every character, does not do justice to Clavell at all. Wish I could get a refund for this amateur hatchet job. Especially after listening to Gildart Jackson's epic reading of Tai-Pan.

It can’t touch Shogun.

I loved Shogun. I enjoyed Tai Pan. It’s no Shogun but it was fun.

This book is a trite soap opera. It’s so bad that I’m angry with the author for making me doubt Shogun’s excellence.

I suppose everyone must make a living.

Good but it's no Shogun.

Good but it's no Shogun. The narrator is good but his American accent is grating.
