For years now that scene has been dominated by the “anti-heroes"—those grim gray operators in a sunless sub-culture where global issues are worked out with totally unemotional pragmatism, those hapless uninspired puppets manipulated and expended by ruthlessly dedicated little brothers of Big Brother. It made morbidly fascinating narrative, but it never gave anyone a lift until it climaxed in the hyper-gadgeted parodies of 007 extravaganzas.

LOW THRESHOLD FOR SHORT STORIES
When I read a book of short stories I expect to dislike most of them. I, in fact, read the first page of each one and if it does not grab me I am done with it. Not the book, just that particular story. I am more than satisfied if there is just one story that I really like. NO COMEBACKS, which is the title of the first story, is one of the very best I have ever read. In fact, I read it years ago in paperback and saved the paperback because I liked NO COMEBACKS so well. The narrator is superb, The story is masterfully done and I have listened to it twice this time even though I know every turn in the story. GREAT READ.....AGAIN!!!

No Comebacks By Frederick Forsyth
Normally I do not like short stories, however this book is a collection of short stories that go from good to incredible. The Emperor and The Careful Man are stories that make life worth living no matter how rough life is going.

Some excellent stories
Some excellent stories. However, this should really come into the Abridged section as having read the original physical book there are at 2 stories missing from the original book, There Are No Snakes in Ireland is one (in my opinion the best from the original book) and Duty. If these were included it would get 5 stars from me.

A great short story collection
Any additional comments?
I enjoy a good short story and find very few great collections. Here is a great one, with excellent plots and twists. All the tales are good and a couple stand out. 'A Careful Man' and 'The Emperor' are memorable.

Not all of the stories in the book are here.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
Where was the story-There Are No Snakes in Ireland? It is in my copy of the book but was not on the audio.

Audiobook incomplete!!
A couple of stories missing from the audiobook, unexpected from Audible, wasted 1 credit for the month !!
Narrated brilliantly however, no complaints on the author or narrator.
