Publisher's Summary

Never go back - but Jack Reacher does, and the past finally catches up with him.... Never Go Back is number-one New York Times best-selling author Lee Child’s new novel of action-charged suspense starring "one of the best thriller characters at work today" (Newsweek).

Former military cop Jack Reacher makes it all the way from snowbound South Dakota to his destination in northeastern Virginia, near Washington, D.C.: the headquarters of his old unit, the 110th MP. The old stone building is the closest thing to a home he ever had.

Reacher is there to meet - in person - the new commanding officer, Major Susan Turner, so far just a warm, intriguing voice on the phone.

But it isn’t Turner behind the CO’s desk. And Reacher is hit with two pieces of shocking news, one with serious criminal consequences, and one too personal to even think about.

When threatened, you can run or fight.

Reacher fights, aiming to find Turner and clear his name, barely a step ahead of the army, and the FBI, and the D.C. Metro police, and four unidentified thugs.

Combining an intricate puzzle of a plot and an exciting chase for truth and justice, Lee Child puts Reacher through his paces - and makes him question who he is, what he’s done, and the very future of his untethered life on the open road.

This was the best Reacher yet. We loved it! Great story, it kept your mind going following his calculations and review of events. Need more like this one!

    "Disappointed."
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The story line was cookie cutter quality. The narrator wasn't compelling especially with the female voices.

    "Great fun"

Reacher as he always is, but with more dimension. He reaches out to a woman who has taken over a division where he used to be the commander. Their both in a "rouch position" but Reacher is so sure of his actions and of this woman's that they ally and escape and then investigate brilliantly what is gong on. Dick Hill is great as always and the book is just plain fun (the usual violence but somehow less dominant on the theme).

    "Simply Ridiculous"

I have enjoyed earlier books in the Jack Reacher series. Child seems to be losing it. The book is in the "Reacher is unjustly jailed as part of a big conspiracy" mode yet again (yawn). What's worse is the cartoonish, nonsensical actions that Reacher and the other characters take, as if the author feels no responsibility toward plausibility, just randomly writing down whatever comes to mind. Reacher and his companion are fleeing the police, FBI, and MPs on a winter's night in rural Virginia in a stolen Corvette and so they--of course--put the top down for kicks--because that is a sure way to avoid notice, right? It's like that over and over again. Simply junk.

    "Worth a credit"
If you could sum up Never Go Back in three words, what would they be?

    Best Reacher yet.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Never Go Back?

Book eighteen and still we see old Reacher developing and he might just settle down. Turn into a regular person, get a job and a family, work for a living....not going to happen.

Which character – as performed by Dick Hill – was your favorite?

Dick Hill performance is great as usual.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Reacher almost struggles with his humanity, just when you think Reacher might consider being normal he doesn't disappoint.

    Any additional comments?

I haven't listened to all of this series, but this has been the best so far ...

    "Cant Get Enough!"
What did you like best about this story?

Good plotting. As usual Child's moves it right along.

What about Dick Hill’s performance did you like?

Every thing. His enunciation and pacing seem to add life the words. Ive listened to the Reacher books before Dick Hill, he's head and shoulders above the other gentleman.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    yes.

    "Good old Jack Reacher"
If you could sum up Never Go Back in three words, what would they be?

The latest Jack Reacher. Sure they're all more or less the same - but yet different enough to keep coming back. The Reacher books are all three day reads or less. I read all 18 of them using Whisper - reading half and listen to half on my commute. They are absolute fun!

No B.S. reviews. I'll never soft-pedal bad writing or inept narration.

    "Falls short of the mark"

I've listened to a number of Jack Reacher novels, and this is far from my favorite.
It just seems to be bogged down with what the gamers call "fetch quests." I got a lot less "excitement," and a lot more "patient waiting" out of listening to this book. By the end, I felt not so much energized as bored.

And what's up with the author's use of the phrase "a long moment?" The definition of "a moment," is "a very short period of time." So, "a long moment" is—what—an oxymoron? Did someone cough? Did the protagonist blink twice? Did the listener scratch his cheek? Ridiculous.

As for the narration, Dick Hill has many good qualities as a narrator—he generally seems to know what the story is about, and creates a decent visual impression of the characters and events. That being said, this book lacks the energy and crispness of his best work. It's a far cry from the more inspired work he produced in "Echo Burning."

I'm always up for a good Reacher novel, but this one just falls short of the mark.

"Reacher is still a hard guy to catch"

Another Reacher hard ops story with a twist. Jack returns to meet the commander of his old unit. He liked her voice. Both are set up for false charges and the book, follows them as they try to find out who and why. Obviously, they find out, resolve the issues, and clear their names. How they do it is what the book is all about. I liked it.
