Publisher's Summary

Penn Cage is facing a son's worst nightmare - having his father stand accused of murder. Worse, each effort to defend the legendary Dr Tom Cage unearths new, shocking secrets, leaving Penn to question whether he ever really knew his father at all. At issue is the murder of Viola Turner, once Tom Cage's nurse, now back in Natchez and a corpse in her sister's house. What was the relationship between Tom, Viola, and the "Double Eagle Club", an ultra-violent group of hardened men who considered themselves more elite than their peers in the Ku Klux Klan? In Natchez, where the past is never truly "past", long-buried secrets turn lethal when exposed to the light of day.

The best of the best...what a wordsmith!

Where does Natchez Burning rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Undoubtedly one of the very best. I have heard many excellent books but this has been the finest so far.

What did you like best about this story?

The complexity....the depth of your involvement in the moral implications involved in the story

Which character – as performed by Jeff Harding – was your favourite?

Impossible to say. Jeff Harding is a voice artist forming solid pictures of children, women and men whether they are from different states in America...south or north. I choose most of my books after looking for the name of this artist. I still find it surprising that Mr Harding speaks all the parts.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Surprise at the complexity of southern states life and horrified at the grim politics that seem mediaeval in their practice. All set against a real historical context.

Any additional comments?

This is a long story...be patient time will reward you with one of the best stories I have heard.

I loved this tragic and powerful story and the narrator bought it to life brilliantly. Highly recommended.

Need to read the next novel quickly!

Was gripped by this book. Excellent novel and an excellent audio reproduction. I would definitely recommend it. I found myself listening at times when I would usually be doing something else, so involved was I with the story.

Antebellum skullduggery

Where does Natchez Burning rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

One of the top ten books.

What did you like best about this story?

I like the way fact and fiction are twined together. The characters are believable and bring a sense of the gothic to the table.

What does Jeff Harding bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Beautifully paced read with terrific characterisation in the voicing.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The casual cruelty of the Ku Klux clan members

Worthwhile but a little slow in the middle

This book make a really great start but it lost its way in the middle a bit, before gathering pace again. There was one point where it became pretty hard going, with plot points being hammered home and discussed over and over again between different characters, but by the end I found myself wanting more and googling when the next book will be released. I'm glad I persevered.

The narration was on the whole pretty good and I felt helped capture the southern feel quite well, but the female characters were awful. I found it really distracting any time a female character had a lot to say.

Overall I'd recommend it, with the caveat that it requires a bit of patience. Worth the effort in my opinion.

disapointing ending

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes it was a good read

What was one of the most memorable moments of Natchez Burning?

In the cellar at the end

Have you listened to any of Jeff Harding’s other performances? How does this one compare?

No

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When the reporter got hurt!

Any additional comments?

Just that the ending didn't cover what happened to one of the main characters in the storyline. I suppose it was left to your imagination?
