Publisher's summary

In 1814, Atlas Catesby, a brilliant adventurer and youngest son of a baron, is anxious to resume his world travels after a carriage accident left him injured in London. But his plans are derailed when, passing through a country village, he discovers a helpless woman being auctioned off to the highest bidder - by her husband. In order to save her, Atlas purchases the lady, Lilliana, on the spot to set her free. But Lilliana, desperate to be with her young sons and knowing the laws of England give a father all parental rights, refuses to be rescued - until weeks later when her husband is murdered, and Atlas is the only one who can help clear her name.

Fortunately, Atlas is a master at solving complicated puzzles and finds himself uniquely suited to the task, despite the personal peril it may put him in. But soon he learns the dead man had many secrets - and more than a few enemies willing to kill to keep them quiet.

Just OK for me

I didn't mind the story or the mystery, but I didn't take up with the characters. Atlas was OK, but I didn't like Lilliana at all, and the connection (or lack of) did not appeal to me. I don't want to discourage anyone else from trying the book, but I don't think I will try the rest of the series. It was OK - maybe a book without Lilliana would work better for me.

And a new detective is born

Or at least enjoys puzzles. Truly despicable villians, a charming heroine and a Bow Street runner that reminded me of Columbo. Quite an enjoyable book and plan on getting #2.

Terrific

Really enjoyed. Was looking for something to fill the gap having read all the Sebastian St. Cyr novels and this does it. I’m disappointed that there are only 3 and the author seems to have stopped writing them in 2020. I hope more books come from this author. Well plotted — predictable but it was so good that I didn’t care that I knew the Duke’s secret and who the murderer was and even guessed about Lily long before the reveals.

Very different premise

I enjoy historical mysteries, but I find that they tend to be very alike, really. This one is surprisingly different. I’ll seek out more ny the author.

The narrator is quite good—his command of character voices allowed me to sink into the story, which isn’t always possible if the narrator is awkward.

Good Book

I really liked this story but I didn’t like Mr Davies’ narration. He separated the voices very well but he dropped his voice too often. I had to keep asking my Alexa to get louder and then softer — couldn’t find a happy medium. I will check to see if audible has the next Atlas Catesby mystery and, if it is not narrated by Mr. Davies, I will purchase it; otherwise, I’ll buy a hard copy.

Fair to Middling.

Science a bit inaccurate for the time. I think it could have been improved with a careful rewriting, but reasonably entertaining.

Entertaining

Murder, complicated storyline, interesting characters = entertainment.
Narration excellent, multiple characters and a stodgy policeman (runner). Well done!

A delightful new period mystery

This author know about “what happens next”
The story keeps moving very well The characters are well fleshed,, and sub plots are clever as they weave in.
The narrator is brilliant. He is new to me and a fabulous find. His characters are voiced very well and it’s easy for me to distinguish between them.
What a great find. Great all round.
