Publisher's Summary

Clare Cosi's new friend, millionaire David Mintzer, has an offer no New York barista could turn down: an all-expenses-paid summer away from the sticky city. At his Hamptons mansion, she'll relax, soak up the sun, and, oh yes, train the staff of his new restaurant. So Clare packs up her daughter, her former mother-in-law, and her special recipe for iced coffee for what she hopes will be one de-latte-ful summer...

Soon, Clare tends the coffee bar at her first Hamptons gala. But the festivities come to a bitter end when an employee turns up dead in David's bathroom--a botched attempt on the millionaire's life. Thanks to the Fourth of July fireworks, no one heard any gunshots, and the police are stuck in holiday traffic. Concerned for everyone's safety, Clare begins to investigate. What she finds will keep her up at night--and it's not the java jitters.

    "Great coffee based cozy mystery!"

Clare Cozi is taking a vacation from The Village Blend Coffee House to work as a Barista in her rich friend, David, restaurant in the Hamptons. She's also keeping watch on her daughter's love life with a young man who has a less than stellar reputation. "Madam", her ex mother in law, and owner of the Village Blend fits right in with this rich society crowd, having a summer fling herself.

Everything is going great until death hits David's Fourth of July party. Though the victim is an employee of David's, Clare disagrees with the police as to whom the intended victim was meant to be.

I love these mysteries, as they're filled with coffee facts that are detailed and thoroughly engaging reading. In this book, there are also fun facts about the Hamptons with the rich and famous. Once again, the mystery is exciting and full of red herrings. "Madam's" role in this book is greater, with this spunky 80 something character, who is just endearing. One of the best cozy series around!

    "Nicely done."

I wasn't expecting this series to pan out into something I could enjoy. But, I'm happily mistaken.

There were parts of the book that didn't make a lot of sense to me.. for instance, why would this female just hop right in and start right in investigating before the police? That wasn't answered for me.

Other than those few questions though, the book was a delightful cozy who-dun-it. The mystery was great and the writing is maturing nicely.

I've really enjoyed the narrator in this series. She does a superb job on the voices and makes the characters come alive.

Yes, I can wholeheartedly recommend this book and can honestly say I look forward to listening to the rest of the series now!

    "50-50"

This book has two parts. One is a reasonably interesting murder mystery. The other half consists of extremely long, tedious, unbelievable garbage about "gourmet coffees". The writing is not of a high literary quality, but not objectionable. If abridged it might well be worth listening to. In its present form it tests one's stamina to keep listening to it.

    "She needs a good editor!"

My husband and I listen to books while we work (our own business) and we WANT to love her books. But we now tried four of them and think we may stop -- Coyle needs an editor. She repeats herself way too often in the same book, telling us over and over again how her main character is jealous of her ex-husband (really? grow up -- should have been dealt with in book one) and if we are now chiming in about certain phrases ("strong jaw" "hard pecs" "good doctor" "Looks like Sean Connory") because they are over-used. Her stories are not bad -- she spins a good yarn -- but if her editor can't do their job then she should pay for her own. Also, a grown woman who never ever sleeps with anyone? She wants to but doesn't? Give me a break. We are moving on --
    Excellent narrator!

Decent enough continuation. Characters still holding my interest. I think I'll continue with the series.

    "It was pretty good"

This book started out a little different then the others in serires because they are not in New York, but it still had the great "make you want a coffee" feeling. I love that about the books, it as if you can solve anything with a good cup of joe. Loved the setting and the desciptions of the places and people. The only thing I seem to have trouble with is how quickly she falls in love with the new boyfriends, but still wants to hang on to a notion that her and Detective Mike might have a chance. I do like the interaction between mom and daughter but she really has to chill out, she started sounding in the shrill part of momhood. I've only listened to the audio books with this series and actually quite like them. I listen while I'm working so its perfect way to keep in touch with reading.

A good, lighthearted murder mystery. Wonderfully rich plot with enough twists and turns to keep me guessing whodunit until the very end!

    "Guilty pleasure"

These books are definitely not literary masterpieces. But they are addicting. It's fun listening to a naive, headstrong Claire bumble her way through mysteries and romance. I love the tidbits about coffee, it definitely makes you want to enjoy a cup while you read.

"Full of surprise twists and turns"

This fourth book in Cleo Coyle's Coffee House mystery series finds the significant women in Clare Cosi's life summering in the Hamptons as house guests of new friend David Mintzer. Clare is still earning a living as Coffee Barista but for the summer at David's new restaurant Cup of Joe where she sees that things are set up correctly and teaches the ropes to all the new employees. Then she is able to walk the beach daily, swim, and relax in her off hours.

David sees the excellent job Clare is doing as well as her daughter Joy who is also working and dating and learning some life lessons in the process. Being so close and in the course of her investigations, Clare finds Joy being enticed by a famous boy at David's July 4th mega-party who gives her his number which Clare then publicly tears up. In this audio version, you can really hear how much this angers Joy. Clare questions Joy actually dating a boy from a mega rich family who has made its fortune in pharmaceuticals, especially when she sees Joy and her boyfriend buying drugs.

I'm jumping ahead of myself. Did I mention that Clare's ex-mother-in-law Madame was also a house guest looking for a summer fling, just as Joy is doing? All three ladies work a mega party on July 4th at David's mansion on the beach. On the evening of the 4th David retires early due to a migraine. Clare checks on him as the party dies down only to see splintered wood from a bullet. She opens the door to the master bathroom to find a dead man who looked very much like David until David stumbles in after waking from a nap that got rid of his migraine.

Police were called but were very busy plus were detained by holiday traffic. Clare took it upon herself to check for evidence. She runs down to the beach and finds empty and full shell casings with a line of webbed feet, like from swimming flippers, leading into the water. Without hesitation, Clare swims out to the black and empty yacht to get the name of the boat. She fights the currents to return to shore and lands at the neighbor’s party! She spots the man in the wet suit but can do nothing publically about it in.

Clare jumped right in and did the police’s work, but they don’t feel very appreciative. David is, however, so Clare’s fears of losing her job for the summer are unfounded. As a matter of fact, Clare is given a sort of promotion at the Cup of Joe which gives her access to the private employee’s lounge, where she hears the terms the current buyer is giving. He’s embezzling money from the restaurant! Clare discovers more as well. Thankfully she has David’s ear, and the pieces of the puzzle start to come together.

This book was full of surprise twists and turns and plots twisting with subplots and winding up at totally different endings than suspected. I can’t exactly call this a cozy but I can’t call it hard boiled; it is somewhere in between, perhaps a hard cozy? Whatever exact genre this might fit into, it was extremely enjoyable and had elements of suspense, surprise, humor, love, parenting, and investigations by an amateur who is becoming better with each book! Definitely recommended.
