Editorial reviews

In the erotic fantasy Midnight Man, silkily performed with a coy wink by Alexandra R. Josephs, someone has just moved into Suzanna Barron’s building. He’s a man named John Huntington. And he just so happens to be the sexiest hunk that Ms. Barron has ever seen in her life.

The passion is not unrequited and the two quickly move to marathon lovemaking sessions - described with such detail it’s as if the listener has been issued a direct challenge not to blush.

Killers are also after Suzanna, by the way. But it’s okay. Because John Huntington is a former Navy SEAL warrior…because of course he is.

Publisher's summary

Interior decorator Suzanne Barron's new tenant is the most dangerously sexy man she's ever met. Navy Commander John Huntington, a former SEAL (aka 'Midnight Man') works best under the cover of darkness. Within hours of meeting him, Suzanne has wild, no-holds barred sex with John, then panics at the depth of her passionate response to such a powerful and dangerous warrior. Suzanne doesn't do sex like that. John is definitely someone she needs to avoid for her own peace of mind. But when killers come for her, Suzanne knows she can turn to only one man. John will guard and protect her body. But who will guard and protect her body against John?

A hot and sexy listen! Recommended"

Suzanne inherited a factory building which she converted into two units. Each unit has an office for the public in front and an apartment in the back (kitchen, bedroom, etc.) Suzanne is an interior decorator. She works and lives in her unit. Suzanne placed an ad for a tenant to rent the second unit. John sees the ad and ends up renting the second unit. He is a former navy SEAL and currently has a security firm. It's love and lust at first sight. John takes Suzanne out for dinner the first night. On the second night, a hit man sneaks into Suzanne's apartment planning to kill her. She calls John, and he is able to get there in time to save her. John takes her to a secluded cabin in the mountains until the authorities can figure out why she is a target.

REVIEWER'S OPINION:
I loved how John was always so intensely turned on that he couldn't control himself and couldn't be gentle. He tried, but his lust for Suzanne was too consuming. Character wise think powerful caveman with delicate angel. The sex, the characters and the plot were all excellent. I loved the ending. It made me think of Mr. Darcy's "grand gesture." Although different from Mr. Darcy's gesture, John's actions at the end of the book were a "grand gesture." I loved what he did. The only weakness in the story was that a few times there was too much pondering in the minds of the characters. This book is shorter than most romance novels, but worthwhile. This is the first of three books in the Midnight series.

Alexandra Josephs did a great job with the delivery of the story

Alpha yummyness!!!!!!!!

Oh, yummy yummy yummy!!!! Great book! Hotter than hot, plausible story, no virgins or billionaires, and it grabs you from minute one!

This is technically part of a trilogy but it's not really a continuing story of the same 2 people. This is technically book 1, but book 2 overlaps this time frame so when I started book 2 I thought audible had made an error, but no, the author says this is book one as well.

Okay, being a former Naval commander John is a bit awkward out of uniform. He still gives off scary sniper bad ass vibes but hey he is who he is, and being the alpha male that he is he knows what he wants and he wants his new landlord....any way he can get her!

Suzanne is a normal woman with a normal life, she's a designer of spaces. She can come in and design an office or a living room to suit your personality and style. A pet project of hers has been to redesign a building she owns and the day after she posts the ad in the paper she is surprised to meet the former Naval commander who is setting up his new security company and needs to rent a space. He has danger written all over him...but that's actually oddly appealing!

This book is highly recommended! It has heat and action and yummy alpha maleness! Already downloaded book 2. I did feel the ending of the story was abrupt so I have to give it 4 stars but I'm hoping we can hear a bit more about these two in the other books.

Sex Against a Brick Wall

While the author is obviously talented, she lost me when she attempted to convince her readers that rough, unprotected sex on a first date with a virtual stranger is romantic. Seriously?

Although Midnight Man is listed as romantic suspense, the plot was basically erotica with very little romance or mystery. In fact, the only real mystery was how interior decorator Suzanna (28) managed to stay alive until John Huntington (36) swept in to rescue her.

Evidently Suzanna was intelligent enough to finish college and start her own business, yet she lived & worked in an old factory located in a dangerous neighborhood without taking common sense precautions: gate/fence, security lights, self-defense lessons.

John, ex-Navy, said that he would never intentionally hurt a woman, then shoved Suzanna's bare body against a brick wall (brush burns), and left her covered with bruises. Macho John decided she "belonged" to him, as if Suzanna was a trophy he won after saving her life.'

Their instant love story really didn't work for me, since they never spent anytime getting to know each other. No conversations, no humor, no respect. John needed someone to control and Suzanna needed to be "taken care of".

Since I like books which feature strong, capable females who want an equal life partner, not a domineering alpha jerk, I was incredibly disappointed in both the lead characters. John treated Suzanna like a not-too-bright sex toy, not a real person with feelings.

Note: There was a passage that described how soldiers get sexually excited by combat and need release afterwards, suggesting it's okay if their "partner" is not willing or even human. How insulting to our military men!

Like watching TV

This one is written by a woman, and yet the whole time I was reading it, it felt like something a guy would write. The male is over the top macho, gun toting super trouper, and the woman is a damsel in distress. Yeah, their both flawed and needy and sexy time ensues, but I've had a belly full of this kind of plot in the numerous cop shows that crop up year after year. I read to get away from this crap.

Nothing new here.

Just ok...

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I seem to be in the minority here but this book was just ok for me. I didn't feel like the characters were well developed. The "love" came out of nowhere and I couldn't fathom why; I didn't much care if the characters lived or died as I felt like I didn't really know them. Not to mention there were some overall implausibility. Someone tried to kill Suzanne and she gets whisked off to a cabin with a relative stranger and has wild sex and finds love and not once does she question what the hell is going on until the very end!! Really?!?! I find that hard to believe but, even if I were to suspend reality for a bit, I still couldn't understand why John fell in love with her within days of meeting her. I understand his reason to protect her as that was in his nature, but love?? Nah, didn't feel it. Will probably not read others in the series if they are like this one.

What was most disappointing about Lisa Marie Rice’s story?

Characters not fleshed out

Was Midnight Man worth the listening time?

It wasn't terrible but not great either

3.5 STARS GOOD YES BUT ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT

Who else but John are you going to call when you find an Assassin in your apartment - he's your new Tenant, an ex Special Ops Navy Seal who's dangerous, dark, brooding and a total Alpha male. Well that's what Suzanne, a petite sweet interior designer thought and, like a Dark Knight, he came to her rescue.

This had a very sexy 'instant attraction' plot with murder, mystery and a touching few chapters but there were just a few things missing like - romance, I love you's, the truth to be told to her about what happened to her friend and it was an abrupt ending so it could have benefitted from an Epilogue.

Worth a credit? I liked the characters but I didn't love them, I liked the storyline but I didn't love it and I thought the author was good but just not great - however, despite this it WAS an enjoyable listen, so YES creditworthy and I will be downloading the next in the series.

WHY IS THIS BOOK ON AUDIBLE'S LIST?

What disappointed you about Midnight Man?

This is a poorly written bodice ripper disguised as a thriller. 80% of the dialogue is of the male and female protagonists' sexual feelings and activities. I will admit that I laughed many times through the dialogue and about half way through, when I was about to stop wasting my time with this one, I just hung on to see if there ever was a plot. But, about 70% done, I just had enough of "his bulging chest muscles" and their "throbbing" this and "rock hard" that, and stopped. I was annoyed that I spent time and credits on this one for sure.

What could Lisa Marie Rice have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Not given up her day job.

What didn’t you like about Alexandra R. Josephs’s performance?

Not being a fan of romance novels, it's hard to judge.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Annoyance. A feeling that Audible needs to do a better job of judging the worthiness of its choices.

I really wanted to like this.

What disappointed you about Midnight Man?

The story and characters were poorly written...actually what story there was could have been told in 30 minutes. It was 8 hours of sex, badly written sex.

What was most disappointing about Lisa Marie Rice’s story?

I'm not sure this one was even written by her. The whole thing was a disappointment.

Did Alexandra R. Josephs do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

She did an ok job of narrating but John voice was somehow off. Of course there wasn't even a character developed even to have a personality.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

The only redeeming quality was when it finally ended.
