Why no Unabridged Version?

Great story that suffers from the butchering done to make this an abridged audiobook. You can hear the cuts with long passages of silence before George starts speaking again as if they're chapter endings. I checked Amazon and the Audiocassettes are in unabridged format with George Guidall reading. So what happened?

Good Modern Western

I have read most of this series and like the first few books best. Good dialogue, good descriptions of the south west, good suspense. The narrator (George Guidall) is excellent as usual.

amateurish exposition

Not even George Guidal could rescue this ineptly written book. The book might actually be good, for all the reasons I tried it: set in the west, addressing real issues of public land use, etc, but whoever wrote it is either inept or supremely lazy. How many times per page does he have characters say to one another :"we've talked about this," and then proceed to reiterate this supposed conversation, telling each other what they already know, recapping their 'disagreements' as a sneaky (sic) way to explain the characters in the guise of drama. And this is not to mention the half-dozen times the narrator has to switch voices to accommodate the on-the-fly point of view changes the author makes in order to have one character look at the protagonist so she can describe him, vor example. This is the kind of stuff people learn not to do in an introductory writing class, not something people should be expected to pay to listen to . . .
