La storia costituisce una sorta di seguito del precedente "Le avventure di Tom Sawyer"; ritroviamo infatti, stavolta come protagonista, Huck Finn, lo scapestrato amico e compagno di avventure e disavventure di Tom.
La vicenda riprende da dove si era conclusa quella precedente, ovvero con l'arricchimento dei ragazzi in seguito al ritrovamento di un tesoro. Huck, spirito libero e selvaggio, sembra essersi convertito alla civiltà, ma fin dall'inizio abbandona gli agi e gli obblighi senza alcun rimpianto. Rintracciato dal padre, violento ubriacone interessato ad averlo con sé solo per impadronirsi dei suoi soldi, scappa su una zattera lungo il Mississippi in compagnia di Jim, uno schiavo nero in fuga.
Durante questo viaggio Huck e Jim vivranno rocambolesche e appassionanti avventure che li vedranno naufraghi nel Mississippi, impelagati in loschi imbrogli con una coppia di maldestri truffatori, braccati dalle autorità che cercano di acciuffare il negro fuggiasco... ma anche accolti da amici disposti a dal loro una mano; fino all'inaspettato incontro finale con l'amico Tom Sawyer e all'avventurosa e ironica conclusione. Huck Finn è colui che cerca il valore e il senso delle azioni nell'esperienza vitale per sé, rappresenta la negazione di tutti i luoghi comuni, del conservatorismo, delle regole oppressive delle comunità agricole del Sud degli Stati Uniti ma che snobba anche il Nord progressista. È un personaggio che, anche a rischio della propria pelle, cerca nella storia, nei fatti, nella quotidianità un modo di essere sempre innovativo, prendendosi pienamente tutte le responsabilità.
