Publisher's summary

Investigative journalist Laura Chambers is back in her tiny hometown of Hillsborough, North Carolina, the one place she swore never to return. Fired from The Boston Globe, her career in shambles, she reluctantly takes a job with the local paper. The work is simple, unimportant, and worst of all, boring - at least until a missing girl turns up dead, the body impeccably clean, dressed to be the picture of innocence.

Years earlier, 10-year-old Patty Finch left home and never made it back. But for the people of Hillsborough, Patty was just the beginning. Child after child disappeared, a reign of terror the town desperately wants to forget. Now that terror has returned to seize another girl. And another. And another.

This is the story Laura's been waiting for - her one last chance to get back onto the front page. She dives deeper into a case that runs colder by the second, only to discover the truth may be far closer to home than she could have ever imagined.

Powerful, intricate, and tense, Last Girl Gone will have you looking over your shoulder long after the last page.

Why the whispering?

I actually enjoyed the story and the twist at the end. However, it was all I could do just to get through the entire audiobook. The narrator sounded as if she were whispering throughout the entire book. Also it was hard to distinguish between characters because all of her voices sounded pretty much the same. When one is narrating an audiobook the narrator is the key ingredient. It can definitely make or break a story. In this case, it was definitely a break.

Good story, some issues with characters

I liked the story and it had some good twists and some surprises. I was taken aback at how every person in this town seemed to be very angry and unfriendly. I know you will always find some unfriendly and bad people, but every person the main character came in contact with seemed to hate her or think badly of her even when she was trying to save a young girl. Other than an unrealistic town atmosphere, the story was good.

Dragged on

I had to skip a few chapters. The story seemed to drag on at a slow pace.

I enjoyed the book for the most part App

I liked the story line in general. I found myself a little frustrated at some points where it seemed a little far fetched...... But assumed it was the drama factor being added. There were definitely some twists and turns That made the book. The narration was good overall but at some parts I found it very hard to listen to because she was too breathy and I don't know how to explain it actually. It was kind of distracting. But I would most certainly recommend this book.. I listened to books on my daily commute and this one kept me very interested.

Chilling and Surprising

Although this was a more gruesome audio book than I would usually read, it was very good. The protagonist's Mother was a bit of a caricature but everyone had a believable back story and the end was a surprise. The setting was North Carolina but the reader did not use even a hint of a southern accent which was a curious choice, I thought.
