Publisher's Summary

A retired cop past her prime.

A kidnapped bank robber fighting for his life.

A former mob enforcer with a blood debt.

A government assassin on the run.

A wisecracking private eye with only one hand.

A homicide sergeant with one week left on the job.

And three of the worst serial killers, ever.

This is where it all ends. An epic showdown in the desert, where good and evil will clash one last time.

His name is Luther Kite, and his specialty is murdering people in ways too horrible to imagine. He's gone south, where he's found a new, spectacular way to kill. And if you have enough money, you can bet on who dies first.

Legendary Chicago cop Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels has retired. She's no longer chasing bad guys, content to stay out of the public eye and raise her new daughter. But when her daughter's father, Phin Troutt, is kidnapped, she's forced to strap on her gun one last time.

Since being separated from his psychotic soulmate, the prolific serial killer known as Donaldson has been desperately searching for her. Now he thinks he's found out where his beloved, insane Lucy has been hiding. He's going to find her, no matter how many people die in the process.

All three will converge in the same place. La Juntita, Mexico, where a bloodthirsty cartel is enslaving people and forcing them to fight to the death in insane, gladiator-style games.

The reader is all wrong for this book

I miss the old reader of this series. It is odd to have a male as the reader when a female protagonist is telling the story for the most part.

Could not listen...

I bought both Last Call and Rum Runner as I was excited there were two more Jack Daniels books. However, I could not get past the narration... The villains' voices are ridiculously overdone to the point of being campy. The author reading is also really bad; he sounds like he's reading it vs. performing. Sorry, and I dislike giving bad reviews, but I highly suggest listening to the "sample" before purchasing as I did. If they were re-recorded with previous narrators they would be great.

Konrath does it again

Konrath does it again with this latest addition to the Jack Daniels series. As always there're more twists and turns than a roller coaster. I highly recommend this installment.

Better than I expected!!

I really did enjoy this book. I like the J A Konrath writing style. I admit a few times I had to put the book down and walk away- thinking wow-that was just too much! Even for me! but i always came back. I still miss the female narrator Susie and I miss the individual quirks Dick gave the characters. It was a huge surprise (good job!) cliffhanger and I enjoyed it very much to my surprise and delight. Looking forward to White Russian. Please don't kill off any more of my friends.

Another great book in this Detective series

I will say I enjoyed others in this series more than this one. Although I still highly enjoyed this book. Maybe I am just frustrated over the Character that died at the end of the book as it was one of my favorite characters! lol Anyway this is a great series between humor, fast paced action, etc. Some readers complain there is too much violence and gore but that does not bother me and I actually enjoy it. I thought this was the last in the series but apparently there is another although I don't think it is on amazon yet.

It's ride... still deciding..

On balance this was a extraordinary book, sometimes I loved it sometimes I thought it was stupid. The end was too drawn out and just made me go ... yeah sure ... bull $4it . Blah blah blah .... didn't find it realistic. Yet sometimes the author hits his stride and the dialogue is great worth the time and effort. Funny and irrelevant, I don't know... worth reading but got the feeling author was just throwing stuff against the wall at the end. I'm gonna read another one and see if it get better...

I've Found A New Favorite Author

What made the experience of listening to Last Call the most enjoyable?

Absolutely love the Jack Daniels books!! The storylines are terrific. The melding of Janet Evanovich and Patricia Cornwell is a dream come true.

What did you like best about this story?

You are actually engrossed - unable to predict the outcome... Held on with the suspense! Waiting for the next laugh, which is why I am so enthralled by this author. The fine mix of suspense and comedic moments keeps you from getting bored.

Which scene was your favorite?

Every scene kept me wanting more!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Don't want to say what moved me the most or I would spoil it for other readers.

Any additional comments?

Please, please, please... Go back to the original female narrator!!!!!!! She makes Jack Daniels ALIVE!!!! The male narrator is great, BUT I was so disappointed - it wasn't Jack :( "something was missing" - I wish I knew her name to insert here. I intend to find out and look for anything she narrates - She becomes the character! She IS whoever she is reading and she's the match for this author. Give her a raise & get her back - 'cuz she is Jack!!

I downloaded every Jack Daniels, so far... What's next for her? I'm hoping it comes soon. I download an average of 20 books a week from Kindle Unlimited. None of the books I've gotten since I finished this series has kept me engrossed. Not one.

So Good..

If you love lies, half-truths, romantic teases, twists and turns, and age-old stereotypes about cops and doughnuts, The Last Call will keep you hanging onto your seat as if you’re on a high-speed chase up and down the famed streets of Chicago
