Hastening to the baron's deathbed is his eldest son, Hugh, a veteran of Edward's Crusades who can't shake off the battle horrors he has witnessed. The baron's daughter, Prioress Eleanor, has already arrived to tend to her father, bringing along her subinfirmarian, Sister Anne, and the monk Brother Thomas. Awaiting Hugh is his illegitimate son, Richard, a youth filled with rebellion - and a secret.
The royal manor is packed with troubling guests, including a sinister priest, an elderly Jewish mother mourning a son hanged for the treason of coin-clipping, contentious and greedy courtiers, and a lusty wife engaged with more than one lover. In fact, many at the manor had reason to wish Hawis dead. And one of the suspects is Richard.

One of her best
Historical mysteries are my favorite leisure reads. Priscilla Royal is one of my favorite authors and the characters in this series are drawn with complexity. This entry in the series brings new depth and complexity to the primary characters just when my interest was waning. Good job🤓

The last one narrated by Wanda McCaddon?
I have been bingeing this excellent series on Audible, but my bingeing has just come to a screeching halt. It seems the rest of the books in this series have either not been recorded as audiobooks (3 of the 5), or are recorded by narrators other than Ms. McCaddon (2 of the 5). Having listened to two others in the series that were not narrated by her, I won't be listening to these two. Ms. Royal, if you have any influence at all on who records your books, please stick with Ms. McCaddon! She is a perfect fit for them.
