Publisher's summary

Nothing in Cree's experience as a Harvard-trained clinical psychologist or as a paranormal investigator has prepared her for Tommy Keeday's case. A talented young Navajo, Tommy has recently been exhibiting bizarre symptoms that his family believes are signs of possession by a chindi, a hostile spirit. As Cree struggles to find answers, she becomes increasingly aware that Tommy and the people who surround him have some deep and disturbing secrets.

The follow-up to City of Masks and Daniel Hecht's latest novel, the second in the Cree Black series is a thrillingly plausible supernatural mystery, a passionate love story, and a thoughtful exploration of Navajo culture and identity in modern America.

Another fascinating book

Cree Black is a psychologist who studies and assists people experiencing paranormal events. Cree Black and her team investigate these events using traditional and historical research in addition to the paranormal research. This book is squarely based in reality; discussing possible plausible explanations for paranormal events and placing paranormal events in historical and cultural context. When reading, you don't feel like you have to totally suspend disbelief for the entire 17 hours (as you sometimes do with a Dean Koontz or Stephen King). This book is more about solving the mystery using psychology and research than about the paranormal experience - this would be a good book for people who like mysteries but need a break from the gruesome serial killer genre so prevalent among the best seller list. The narration is also excellent with good accents for the different characters. I could not stop listening to this.

Must Read!

I discovered City of Masks and was unable to stop listening. Now Cree Black (and friends) are back in this Land of Echoes. I only hope and pray the author is busy writing another installment in this series as I type this. This book is paranormal suspense at its finest! Kudos to Cree - a fresh, new character on the scene with so many more cases to be solved. I will be up late at night listening and experiencing the paranormal plot as it thickens. I find myself so engrossed in the book that the hours fly by. A must read.

Remarkable Landscape, Characters and Writing

My first trip to NM began with a trip to the top of Sandia Mountain and then an exploration of the remarkable New Mexico landscape. This book follows the same path, but breathed life into the walls of the canyons, the expanse of the dessert and the incredible blue of the sky and pitch black of the night. Hecht is a very talented writer -- his story is well-crafted and the characters he creates are all solid, well-conceived and well-developed in the course of the book. Cree Black is a marvel of intelligence and complexity and yet draws on all one's empathy as she embraces very basic, human questions.

Hecht had to have done a tremendous amount of research to pull together such a believable plot built on the tenets of parapsychology and Native American culture. I'm grateful that it didn't get in the way of the story which is already long at fifteen hours -- every detail chosen builds the story and moves the plot forward. That said, there are some wonderful descriptive passages in the book of the land and the people that bring them all to life that are well worth rereading. The narration was superb. Anna Fields is a remarkable reader who can change her character or the mood as required in an instant.

I highly recommend this book, as well as City of Masks and hope to see more of Cree Black in the future.

Another Good One

Just as I was thinking this book is not as jaw-dropping as City of Masks, I gasped as the identity of the ghost was revealed. Didn't see that one coming at all! This book has more breadth and depth than City of Masks. There are more characters, they are better developed, there's more landscape to enjoy, and the author's choice of Navajo culture as a backdrop allows for some exploration of legends and traditions. He was also much more imaginative with the ghost and its manner of ... presentation, shall we say. The fact that Anna Fields researches accents and pronunciations is quite apparent here. I was especially impressed by her ability to differentiate for us the many Navajo characters, as well as her consistency of accent and personality for each one.

Very, very good.

Having recently enjoyed "City of Masks", I was really looking forward to the second Cree Black audio book and I have to say I wasn't disappointed.

The narration is simply excellent, probably one of the best I have heard, bringing the characters to life with a wide (but not forced) array of accents.

A strong story blending traditional and modern beliefs develops the story and characters introduced in "Masks", allowing us a little more into Cree's life and understanding her motivations and background.

If you enjoyed "City of Masks", I'm sure you'll enjoy this as much if not more.

If you haven't come across Cree Black before, start with "City of Masks" and then come here, you won't regret it!

a girlie book

I'm sorry if this makes me mean and shallow, but I wasn't able to enjoy this book simply for the reason in the title. I think it was well written, and very well performed, and I really did try. But...
So if your a guy, and you get tired of the girl to girl dialog, and girlie description of male characters. Be warned.
I couldn't finish it, and I was listening to it while I was working on firewood. That's when the escape into a story is so great.

What Audiobooks Should Be

Every time I listen to Anna Fields read a book I like her more. She is a thoroughly skilled and educated reader. Her accents are spot-on and she doesn't get irritating when she reads a male part. Clearly she researches quite a bit before taking on a new project.

The story is the second in a series featuring Cree Black, a "psychologist for ghosts," and takes a surprising twist. Instead of doing another haunted house with another tormented ghost, which fans of this sort of thing would gladly have read, Daniel Hecht put Cree somewhere completely different -the Rez- and gave her a completely new problem -a possession. This was a totally original story, gripping and tragic at times, and dare I say even uplifting at others. I am really looking forward to a third book by this author.

Great narration, great story!

Let me briefly add my voice to the chorus of praise for both the story and the narration of Land of Echoes. I've read all the Cree Black novels, and listened only to this one, and I believe that Anna Fields brings a new dimension to the story. I find audio a different experience than the printed page -- I believe the narration here is excellent, and brought life to the characters in an exciting way.

Fantastic Presentation

I picked the book because of the narrator and an interesting sounding storyline; this book did not disappoint. The narrator does a fantastic job with the charters and setting the mood and pace. The author has put together a disturbing, though provoking, and haunting story. I would recommend this audio book to anyone who enjoys the narrator “Anna Fields” and a good story.
