Publisher's summary

An American general is captured by Islamic extremists in the Middle East. They threaten to behead him within days. One strange fact: Moments before he is rendered unconscious during the attack, the general notices that his unseen captors speak American English. What's going on?

Gunnery Sergeant Kyle Swanson, a top level marine sniper, is vacationing on a boat in the Mediterranean when he receives orders to mount a top-secret mission to rescue the general. But as he and his men prepare to land in the Iraqi desert, they immediately come under ferocious attack, and Swanson is the only man left alive. How did the enemy know details of a mission known only to a few top government officials?

Swanson takes off across the desert alone to find the captured general and realizes he is fighting a particularly ruthless and dangerous enemy: American mercenaries working for a very high-level group of American officials with ties to the White House itself, part of a clandestine conspiracy whose hidden agenda is nothing less than total control of the American military. Their sworn enemy is the captured general whose fate now rests in Sniper Swanson's hands.

Full of the kind of action author Jack Coughlin lived during his career as a marine sniper, Kill Zone marks the debut of an extraordinary writing team.

Well Done!

I was looking for a book to listen to on a drive, came across this one and decided to give it a try. I was a bit concerned after a few chapters that I made the wrong choice, but stuck with it - I still had hours to go. Glad I did. About 1/3 of the way in the story hit its stride and was well done. I enjoyed the characters, action and detail. I would like to listen to more but there are no more unabridged Kyle Swanson/Sniper books, I hope audible changes that soon. The second book is available but is abridged. I have no use for abridged stories, what is the point?

Too painful to listen to

Any additional comments?

Firstly, if the narrator intends to continue trying to mimic regional accents, he needs a professional coach - There is a Senator who would make Boss Hogg wince, a bazzillionaire David Niven wanna-be, and his Irish sidekick whom I expected at any moment to say "This brandy is magically delicious"...

Secondly, the characters and dialogue were like something out of a low grade made-for-TV movie... A hit man named "Big Lenny" - Seriously? Every character in the plot, including the Senator, is either current or former elite combat types - Even if the author didn't tell you this in each character's bio, you could tell it by their braggadocious dialogue and their eager willingness to mix it up with random toughs who get in their way - Which we all know is the way all special ops guys act.... Right?

The plot (what I heard if it) was pretty predictable but I didn't slight the author for that if he could fill it in with good characters and dialogue - he didn't... After about an hour, my wife threatened to leave the room if I didn't shut it off - I told her that "I" would leave the room if I didn't shut it off... So I did...

For all those who liked the book, I wish you joy... For those who have NOT yet bought this book and you're expecting something of the same caliber as Vince Flynn or Daniel Silva, save your credits... I rarely return books I get from Audible and even more rarely write a negative review, but this one made the list...

I love a book that starts out with a bang

I love a book that starts out with a bang and keeps getting better. This one does that and more.

In the Middle East an American General has been kidnapped and his personnel have been murdered. General Middleton realizes that the kidnappers are speaking American English. They are not Arabs! Then he is knocked out with an injection of drugs. This starts a series of events that bring the general and Gunnery Sgt. Kyle Swanson back together.

Kyle Swanson is on vacation in the Mediterranean with friends aboard a yacht. He is testing a new type of sniper rifle and spending time with his girlfriend. Kyle is one of the highest scoring snipers in the Marines. When word gets out that a General has been snatched, Kyle is ordered to join up with an elite team of Marines for a rescue mission.

The rescue fails leaving Kyle as the only survivor. Now it is up to Kyle to rescue General Middleton. Middleton considers Kyle a mental case and has serious doubts about Kyle’s abilities.

At the same time in Washington the plot thickens. A billionaire, Gordon Gates IV is bankrolling an attempt to take over the military. His man in power is National Security Adviser, Gerald Buchanan. Buchanan keeps the mercenaries informed about the actions of the military and Kyle.

There is a little romance involved but that has an unhappy ending. The characters are well done. This is one really great read. Loved the way Kyle problem solved and saved the day. The interaction between the two men was interesting. Kyle had the experience to keep them alive and Middleton thought he knew best. Ha.

The cover is right on. The sniper and the background of desert is reflective of the harsh and lonely environment.

Read by Luke Daniels and he did a superb job. His voices were perfect for the characters. I especially like the way he voiced Kyle. Sort of a gravely growl. It was great. I listened to it almost non-stop.

There were no production issues – the quality was good and flawless.

Great start to the Sniper/Kyle Swanson series!

Kill Zone, first published in 2007, is an excellent start to this great soon to be (August 2017) 10 novel suspense/espionage/military series which was not available in audio until after the 7th book was published. This forced me to purchase the first 7 novels in the series in other formats.

If the listener likes books by such authors as Andrew Peterson, Brad Taylor, Brad Thor, Scott McEwen, Vince Flynn, and Mark Greaney, then he/she is virtually assured to like this series.

All of es-US Marine Sargent and sniper Jack Coughlin's books, including his autobiography Shooter: The Autobiography of the Top-Ranked Marine Sniper, are coauthored by Donald A Davis.

The first 8 audio books in this series were performed to perfection by Luke Daniels. Then the audio book publisher changed to Scott Sowers for novel 9. Sowers is okay, but he is not Luke Daniels. I will never understand why such changes are made. The narrator for the 10th novel in the series (In the Crosshairs) has not been announced.

The violators of trust

I really liked the characters...the primal ruthlessness of men under extreme survival conditions. The webs of deception were well planned by both the villains and the good guys. Also I appreciated having the author make the point that more often that we would like to admit about our gov. The right hand doesn't have a clue about the left hand. All in all by the end doesn't have riding off into a glorious sissy.
Also the reader did a very good.. Keep your ears up, you'll get a kick out of the staff sergeant she is pure entertainment .

Good Story, but why doesn't the Ret. Gunnery Sergeant know the correct lingo?

I like the story and LOVE Luke Daniels as a narrator! He can make good books great and bad ones good. I've yet to listen to a more skilled narrator.
I'm confused at how the author a retired USMC Gunnery Sergeant does not use the right firearms nomenclature? Just like the misinformed media and dishonest politicians he calls rifle magazines 'clips'. There are several other inaccurate terms used with regards to firearms, firearms parts/accessories as well as situational settings where it is evident that a lack of knowledge is present. It doesn't ruin the book for me. I still enjoyed it, but it's a bit odd to understand. Was this due to an editor who believed it best to continue the incorrect use of terms so as not to potentially confuse the public? I don't understand, but it's the only real issue I have with the book. I'll still read/listen to other books in this series (at least the ones narrated by Daniels).

Kill Zone Rocks!!!

On the positive side, the story has lots of action and is filled with terrific detail that only a real-life sniper would be able to add. The descriptions were vivid and you felt like you were really there. The book itself works well but I think it might be a bit disjointed at times, and I would view the end as being a little bit too rushed, it was more like tying up loose ends than a natural finish to the plot.
Luke Daniels was excellent.

Bad Ass

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

yes - this was a great book to listen to - the action was easy enough to follow and since I am in and out of the car, I really enjoyed a story that held my interest and didn't require a lot of rewinding to remember where I was

What did you like best about this story?

Great character development all the way through

Which character – as performed by Luke Daniels – was your favorite?

not anyone in particular - Luke did a fine job with the different vocalizations without making it unbelieveable

Kyle Swan makes me proud to be an American

What did you love best about Kill Zone?

My first Kyle Swan story. The story was good, maybe a little far-fetched, but not totally out of the question that major military companies could try to influence gov in their direction. Also, I know there are progressives out there that want to write a new constitution. Combine that with a billionaire and there could be trouble.

What did you like best about this story?

The concept of BIG military business trying for a coup. Don't think for a minute that America would buy that, but it is cause to think. The excalibur technology and the scram jet were fun to read.

What aspect of Luke Daniels’s performance would you have changed?

The country bumpkin accent for Kyle's character. It was distracting.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Not really moving, but I liked the aspect of Kyle that had him tell a general to shut up and let him do his job so they both could survive.
