Nobody does dark and delicious like Lilli !!
There really is no way to write a review on this book except to say BRAVO!! It is a fast paced mind bender that I could not put down from start to finish🤯
I am a long time fan of Lilli and hope to see more of her books on Audible!
The Narrators deserve a standing ovation for their outstanding performance of these complicated characters, this is not your average lovers!!
Worth a credit or coin? Fuck yeah!!!
Bring on “Gypsy Brothers” !!!
Lili St. Germain is well-known for being dark, dramatic, gory, and extremely twisted. This book however, took all that to a whole other level. I’m not one to have many qualms over sensitive topics or trigger warnings. I’ll read almost anything. BUT this book, I must admit, was really difficult and uncomfortable to get through. There were times when it was almost painful to keep going. That’s not to say it was bad, it’s just not a book for everyone. I think you need a strong stomach and mind to read/listen to this book.
First off, let it be known that this is NOT a romance. Like not even a little. It is, however, one huge black hole that’ll leave you hollow, confused, and utterly depressed. If you need some ray of hope at the end of your dark reads, you will not get it here. This story is BRUTAL! Essentially everyone in this book is depraved in one form or another. Cassie, our anti-heroine, is a serious mess. You’ll know just how much of an understatement that is at the end of the book. *Plays “Issues” by Julia Michaels* Leo, our not quite hero, is also quite damaged. I found him very contradicting as a character, so he didn’t fully work for me, but he was the only one I had slight sympathy for. I really appreciated the story being told from their POV’s, because the story unfolded in such a fascinating way that leaves you with your jaw on the ground.
The narrators, Zachary Michael and Natalie Naudus, did a really impressive job at bringing these wild characters to life. They knew exactly when to emphasize the crazy, the creepy, and make you believe the lies and manipulation the characters spewed.
There were some editing issues in both the audio and actual text. The story contains some inconsistencies that were not edited out or explained. The audio had repeated sentences that weren’t cut out, as well as awkward, longer than necessary pauses between words during a sentence.
This is a long book and the slow build-up, while important, can seem never-ending. That being said, St. Germain is very descriptive and creates fantastic inner monologues for her characters. This story is a puzzle and every piece is dependent on the other in some way. In the end, you’ll likely get a good measure of satisfaction when all is revealed, but maybe not considering there is no real form of a happily ever after. If you feel like being taken out of your comfort zone and thrown into a world of crazy darkness, get this book!
Leo and Cassie were high school sweethearts however their lives started to change the day that Leo found a dead woman in the well outside his home. It affected him deeply and one year later he was found guilty of drunk driving and his passenger ended up in a vegetative state.
Nine years later Leo is released from jail and returns home however the Cassie he finds is not the Cassie he left. Her life since he left has not been easy and her eyes look weary and he knows he should stay away as her stepfather is the Sheriff and anything he does could send him back to jail but he is unable to stay away from the woman he loves.
You may think you know which people are evil and which people are victims but with each new twist of this dark story your opinion may change. This story is not so much about romance but more about how the events in your life and the people in your life affect who you are as a person and the actions you take.
The narrators did an excellent job at bringing the story to life. They managed to balance the emotion and darkness of this story perfectly which kept you enthralled to the very end. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
Wow, Gun Shy was way more than I ever saw coming!! This was my first Lili St. Germain book and what an introduction it was!! This is one of the most brilliantly written dark thriller-type romances that I have ever read!! I was seriously trapped in this world and it was a world that was dark and I felt incredibly claustrophobic!
Gun Creek is a town where people need to leave. It has to be the place that rots and erodes your soul. Leo, oh Leo, I fell for him immediately. This poor boy/man that is ruled by his member… I guess jail will do that to you. Cassie, oh Cassie, I don’t know whether to bow to your complete and utter craziness or take notes for future reference on your ways. Or should I applaud you for handling it all? Honestly, I just don’t know. I don’t know if you’re crazy or brilliant.
I CAN tell you that Lili St. Germain has written one of the darkest, most brutal books I have ever read. There’s so much manipulation and so many twists you won’t know which way is up or down. I waited for this audiobook for over a month and I can tell you that it was worth the wait. This book is going to expand your mind. It’s going to make you think. Germain can now write any genre and I will follow her.
This audio was complete and utter perfection. The narrators, Zachary Michael and Natalie Naudus were subperb! Seriously the way they melded together was unlike any other audio I’ve listened to. I was trapped in their story-telling. That epilogue was one of the creepiest endings I’ve ever listened too. It makes you wonder how often we really know the people closest to us. The emotions they portrayed matched the story perfectly.
I'm not a religious person. But I need to confess.
Forgive me reader, for I have sinned.
I listened to a book. It took from the light and it gave to the darkness. It spoke of terrible things that happened to good and bad people. And I couldn't stop listening until I had, had my fill of every single word spoken.
Gun Shy is devastatingly good. Unputdownable. Mind Blowing. It's so bad but so damn good. It's torturous to the mind and I feel like a terrible person for enjoying it so damn much.
From the first moment I read the blurb of Gun Shy I was intrigued by the premise of this suspenseful book. Every chapter takes a different turn and keeps you guessing.
Gun Shy begins in Leo’s POV where we learn about the town of Gun Shy and how the first missing girl is found. Within the time frame of a couple of chapters, Leo and Cassie’s lives are irrevocably changed by events completely out of there control.
Gun Shy was written in multiple POV’s and had some of the most twisted, dark and complex characters I’ve ever come across. I don’t like dark, I’ve tried a couple of dark books and I’m way too sensitive to deal with the terrible things that happen to people. I like to live in the book world where I neglect the bad and only read the good, the romantic, and the soft so Gun Shy was completely out of my comfort zone and I damn well loved it!
Some of the scenes could have been horrific if written by someone else by Lili wrote them in a way that you felt almost removed from the situation? It’s so hard to explain her intricate and talented writing style!
This review feels almost impossible to write because I want to tell you all the ways this book affected me and the emotions it evoked but it’s impossible without giving away the secrets enclosed within Gun Shy’s pages.
Cassie was one of the most heart breaking, frustrating and complex characters I’ve ever experienced. She experienced traumatising events and did not escape without a few internal scars.
Not only was she dealing with loss of life but loss of her future. Thrown away in one night during an act by a selfish and sadistic character. Until she tries to take her future into her own hands…
Leo was I think the only character I understood. I understood his actions, his reactions and his justification. I think in the whole town of Gun Shy he was probably one of the only genuine characters? I found him intriguing and uplifting. He saw the bad but he also saw the good.
There are no good people or bad people in the town of Gun Shy. There’s twisted people with agenda’s, secrets, desires and needs and they’re all kinds of flawed. So many scenes gave me the chills and I’m sure it was more intense listening to Gun Shy rather than reading it. Having the characters speaking to you and describing the actions of others was chilling.
The narrators of Gun Shy were Zachary Michael and Natalie Naudus and I was so thoroughly impressed with how they portrayed the characters. I was rewinding to re-listen to specific scenes over and over again. I swear I listened to the Epilogue about 3 times. That last part had me breaking out in goose bumps and looking over my shoulder in the middle of the night!
Only Lili St Germain can write psychologically twisted stories that completely leaves you feeling dumb founded!!! GUN SHY was suspenseful and mind blowing! I couldn’t predict where this story would go and I loved that about Ms. St Germain’s writing! You had to feel for all these characters in this twisted tale!
Lili St Germain writes an amazing twisted tale! It was so good with twists and turns on every page. I could not stop listening to it.
