Publisher's Summary

What are you thinking, Amy? The question I've asked most often during our marriage, if not out loud, if not to the person who could answer. I suppose these questions storm cloud over every marriage: What are you thinking? How are you feeling? Who are you? What have we done to each other? What will we do? Just how well can you ever know the person you love?

These are the questions that Nick Dunne must ask himself on the morning of his fifth wedding anniversary, when his wife Amy suddenly disappears. The police immediately suspect Nick. Amy's friends reveal that she was afraid of him, that she kept secrets from him. He swears it isn't true. A police examination of his computer shows strange searches. He says they aren't his. And then there are the persistent calls on his mobile phone.

So what really did happen to Nick's beautiful wife? And what was in that half-wrapped box left so casually on their marital bed? In this novel, marriage truly is the art of war.

    "Great story"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, it is an interesting book from the start.

What did you like best about this story?

It was a full story from start to finish. No wading through the first half of the book to get to the guts of the story.

    Which scene was your favorite?

Not the ending! It didn't go how I wanted it to :-)

"Almost the masterpiece I'd hoped for"

The story unfolds in parts, with wonderful narration. The use of two (talented) voice actors is perfect for the book.

Part 1 is a cracker of a whodunnit. Gillian Flynn has mastered the art of parallel story-lines, a skill honed in Sharp Objects and wielded here to perfection.

But wait! There's more - a psychological suspense-thriller in the final parts as the protagonists grapple with the consequences. And while Gillian Flynn's second book, Dark Places, fell a bit flat due to improbable coincidences and a largely unsympathetic cast, Gone Girl had me totally sucked in.

I felt so sure this book would be 5 stars and a heart.

That is, until the final climax; the final few pages. WTF? I am underwhelmed and unconvinced.

Perhaps the silver lining is that Gone Girl was almost - but not quite - the ultimate masterpiece in the style that Gillian Flynn has been evolving over three stories to date, so I am left eagerly looking forward to her next. Will that be "The One"?

A book that constantly made you question the narrators and their motives. Very intriguing as it gave a new spin to the the thriller/murder mystery genre.

Shudder. A delicious, twisted, evil, satan of a book. Unreliable, lying, attractive, detestable, addictive narrators; the most realistic take on a crumbled marriage I've read in recent times; twists and double twists and triple twists and then --- just as we were slowly moving towards some kind of an expected conclusion, a whoosh-what-the-f**k-was-that howitzer of an ending. I hated, HATED the ending. Perfect ending. Hated it. Loved it.

PS: Great performances by both of the narrators too.

"Hard to switch off and go to sleep"

This is not the usual type of book I go for, but it was genuinely gripping - flows along in a way that makes it really hard to put down at any given point.
Very well written, sharp and mesmerising insight into two people's psyche's and the tension never stops.
It did get a bit too dark for my liking, and though I'd like to read more from the author, I read the synopsis for her other books and they sound ever darker, so think I'll give them a miss.

    "Brilliant"
What did you like about this audiobook?

Loved the narrators, so engaging. This book interrupted my life as I had to listen at every opportunity.

How has the book increased your interest in the subject matter?

Generally I stick to non fiction, but this book as reignited my enthusiasm for quality fiction.

Does the author present information in a way that is interesting and insightful, and if so, how does he achieve this?

Beautifully written - some colorful language - but in keeping with the characters. Otherwise great writing, and neatly woven together strands of narrative. Kept me on the edge of my seat.

What did you find wrong about the narrator's performance?

Could not fault narrators performances whatsoever.

Do you have any additional comments?

Such a great book - surprising twists, even after 19 plus hours I did not want this to end.

    "Not your typical "whodunnit""

It took me a few chapters to get into this book. When I started listening I thought I had bought a romantic novel with a sicky love story.. Girl meets boy, blah, blah, blah.. I nearly stopped listening, but pushed on because I was on a road trip. Well, what can I say! It turned out to be fantastic.. So push through and enjoy!!!

    "A bit disappointing"
Would you try another book from Gillian Flynn and/or Julia Whelan and Kirby Heyborne ?

Probably. And the performance by Heyborne and Whelan was REALLY good. I believe they really did absorb the essence of the characters.

Would you be willing to try another book from Gillian Flynn? Why or why not?

I would. She can write, I'll give her that, her story here is pretty clever, but I found the characters quite real and at the same time they're like the worst people with the worst character you can find, well, I didn't find that appealing, people are pretty messed up as it is. Moreover, I'd probably try another book because Flynn seems to really be good at writing, I just hope to see some characters the you could empathise a little bit more.

What does Julia Whelan and Kirby Heyborne bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

They make it sound a lot more real, they make you think of the characters as if they were real people. Their performance was excellent, I guess that's one of the reasons I kept on going with the audiobook.

Was Gone Girl worth the listening time?

Not really, but it wouldn't be fair to say that there was nothing to it. I guess it made me think a lot about how we behave, how we try to be accepted(or not), how we play cool, just to fit in, or to think it is the only way we can be loved; and a lot more concerning behaviour, acceptance, deception...

Most of this book seemed suited to an adolescent. Towards middle of Part 2 and a lot of Part 3 was OK but I felt for most of it that I was too old (62).

"unlikeable characters & voices and a slow plot"

I have struggled with this book for 2 months and I am stil only half way through. Normally I go through an audio book in 2 weeks. I am forcing myself to listen to this one but am not enjoying it. The voices are aggressive and bored in the way they are read, and the characters and self centred and unattractive. The husband and wife in the story clearly don't get on so why on earth were they married. The husband is a self centred dislikeable character, and you get annoyed at the wife for putting up with his selfish childish behaviour to the point that you really don't wonder where she has disappeared to. Clearly she left because she realised how horrible her life was and because she is better off without her sponging loser of a husband. I can't imagine a twist in this, except maybe that she is trying to get him to miss her by running off, because clearly he just found her intensely annoying before she disappeared, and vice versa. I will stick it out, because I am not a quitter, but this is not worth the accolades.

    "Recommended by a 40-something male."

I trend to avoid anything hyped as it rarely lives up to expectations, but the sound of this book intrigued me and I have to say it really is a corker. Beautifully read by two readers who seem to inhabit the skin of their respective writers, it is hard to say much about this book without giving too much away. There are enjoyable and believable plot twists, swipes at the manulpulation by, and of, the media, and musings on how we play out reality at second hand, like characters in the (too many) films we've seen. But it is the psychological detail of the writing which gripped me. Rarely have I believed in main characters so much. Gillian Flynn has really got inside this man and woman. She is not judgemental of them (whatever your opinion, as a reader, is of them), and I really admired the way she built them up as humans who are the result of both nature and nurture. And it is so beautifully constructed, especially in the second half, that I laughed with pleasure at the audaciousness of it; and it is never too smart for its own good. For me it's a rare thing - it's absolutely as good as they are all telling you.
