Publisher's summary

A mutilated body is found lying on the ground in Chicago, a dead hand pointing down Adams Street - also known as Route 66, a road of many names and now of many deaths.

A silent caravan of cars, dozens of them, drives down that road, each passenger bearing a photograph, but none of them the same. They are the parents of missing children, some recently disappeared, some gone a decade or more, all brought together by word that children's grave sites are being discovered along the Mother Road. Kathy Mallory drives with them. The child she seeks, though, is not like the others. It is herself, the feral child adopted off the streets, her father a blank, her mother dead and full of mysteries.

During the next few extraordinary days, Mallory will find herself hunting a killer like no one she has ever known, and will undergo a series of revelations of stunning intensity and effect.

Reviewing

This is a twisting story of one woman's self-discovery. The haunting eyes and mysterious behaviors kept my attention. It's telling of a serial child killer was quite disturbing. Just when I thought I had an idea of who the killer may be, the book takes another turn. The description of route 66 and it's long history was quite interesting also. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a good mystery.

Slow

This is my first Mallory novel. Guess I should have llistened to some of the older stuff first. It wsn't a bad novel, but certainly not a real good one. for the last several hours I kept checking to see how much more I had to listen to before I could move on.

Roadtrip!

My first Carol O'Connell book. Kept me guessing; overall good book. Mallory is not your average main character. Now I want to plan a roadtrip down Route 66.

GRABS you, hooks you and pulls you in!

Very good book. Author pulls you in, makes you think and even spooks you some in the descriptions chosen. Totally worth purchasing!

some will some will not

For the money this was a pretty good listen. The female character may have been a little unbelieveable , but heck it is a book.
In spite of the subject matter, it did not have to many horrible child murder moments.
Would make a darn good movie.
A truly wonderful ending.

Mallory's Journey

Fans of Carol O'Connell's outstanding Mallory series will rejoice at the return of Kathy Mallory and her friends in this extended journey into crime, punishment...and into the past along the fabled "Mother Road" Route 66.

"It winds from Chicago to LA..." and Mallory is part of a grisy road trip where among the roadside attractions are the graves of murdered children, a band of searching parents.....and a serial killer. But past and present merge into this caravan of tears....and more often than not Mallory's quest is a detour into her own past, a myriad of dead ends....and an unexpected revelation at the end of the road.

O'Connell is such a wonderful writer, the reader will hang on for the twists and turns on this road trip which moves faster than the VW with a Porsche engine Kathy so ably steers in dark terriory.

Excellent story lines

I really enjoyed all of the different characters and story lines. I have never read a Mallory book before, and now I will read the rest of them. Narrator has such a great voice and one of the reasons I selected it. If you like mystery and several different story lines this book is for you.

Another lost author - sigh

I loved Carol O'Connell's first several books, but the last 4 or 5 sound like they haven't been edited (they could be half the length), and the main character is not evolving at all. Really boring -- I had to force myself to finish it and it wasn't worth it.
