Publisher's Summary

Someone is trying to kill Shannon Flannery, but the police don't believe her. Only Travis Settler, a former Special Forces agent, is inclined to help. He's certain that Shannon's shady past has something to do with the disappearance of his daughter, whose connection to Shannon has nightmarish implications.

Lisa Jackson revives two characters from her popular novel Deep Freeze in this sequel. Her heart-pounding crime novels are famous for their thrilling romances, and Fatal Burn turns up the heat.

    "Good listen"

I enjoyed listening to this book. George Guidall is one of my favorite readers, so that was part of it. The story is good, though. Lots of twists, interesting characters. I particularly liked the young girl, Dani - feisty, brave and smart. By the end, I had figured out the mystery, but I didn't right away. It was a good listen.

"As if a father with a missing daughter..."

I call this type of writing "repeat and remind" - The author repeats the feelings that the characters have over and over until the reader is supposedly lulled into believing that the character actually feels that way - Unfortunately for the author, actions speak louder than words and there is NO WAY a father supposedly so over wraught with distress over his kidnapped daughter would take precious time out to buy steaks and champagne to romance a woman he has just met - this is just one example of the sillyness that takes place in this novel - confusing what might have been an interesting plot line.

    "Love Lisa Jackson......BUT......."

I have never found a Jackson book that I haven't loved. This one is no exception.....the characters and plot is engaging from the get go. But that is only if you read the book, not listen. I forced myself to listen to the entire book but it was hard. That narrator is absolutely horrible at characters, especially women. I've no doubt he is amazing reading with male characters, although trying to do several different voices seem to be tough and they aren't consistent throughout the story here. Overall I love the book, but I think I'll stick to the hard copy from now on

    "Save yourself!!!"

I implore you to listen to the other reviewers who tell of repetition. DON'T WASTE YOUR PRECIOUS TIME with this overly drawn out, painfully repetitious, rambling tale. It is a good story (that was what made me give it a chance) but it wasn't worth it. Too bad JoAnn Ross or another skilled author didn't write this plot or perhaps an editor could have done his/her job and cut it down to an appropriate 7 hours!!

I thoroughly enjoyed this story, however the recording had strange breaks and bad editing, making it choppy .

"Edge of your seat suspense! Awesome listen!"
Would you listen to Fatal Burn again? Why?

I am sure I will listen to Fatal Burn again. It has such great twists and turns!

What other book might you compare Fatal Burn to and why?

I am not sure there is any one book it can be compared to, at least not that I have read or listened to.

    Which scene was your favorite?

When Shannon forces her brothers to come clean about the truth of what they and their father had been doing.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No laughing or crying but it certainly had me feeling like I was on the edge of my seat. The suspense was great.

    Any additional comments?

I like the twist that some of the characters who are normally good guys in books like these turned out to be shady. While this was sad for Shannon it was an unexpected change which was refreshing.

    Story
    "Disappointed"

I decided to listen to this book because I enjoyed the first in the series, Deep Freeze. While not mind bending literature, I found it entertaining and engaging.

This book didn't leave me feeling that way, largely because of the reader. I see he has lots of fans, and I think he has a good voice, but I found his reading of this book annoying. During the action scenes I felt that his reading was more like that of a radio broadcaster shouting out a play by play sports game. I also felt his voice was too old sounding for the characters he was portraying. One of the characters brought over from the first book, Shane Carter, suddenly went from sounding like a handsome young guy to a crabby old guy with an overbearing twang to his speech. If you're as sensitive as I am to readers, you may also find this distracting, to say the least. I really wish readers doing sequels would listen to the books before them and try for some consistency.

The story was OK. As others said, the repetition got old. Overall, I won't say I'm sorry I listened but I am sorry I didn't get it on sale.

"There must have been a MINIMUM count!"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes... Anything read by George Guidall is worth listening too.

Would you recommend Fatal Burn to your friends? Why or why not?

Not without warning them. The story is repetitive to nth degree. It appears to be done unsuccessfully for dramatic effect,to drive home whatever point or maybe the book is sold by weight. Shannon flips and flops between anger at the adoptive father for suspecting her to lusting for him. That is poorly written; any HUMAN would understand the father's suspicions but it's hashed and rehashed. ENOUGH!

What about George Guidall’s performance did you like?

Excellent as always. He can handle the subtleties of characters including female characters.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The character of the teenage daughter, Dani is well formed (although repetition is present with her too).

    Any additional comments?

The overall story isn't bad it's just overdone. The attempt to force romance into the situation while they discuss murder, arson, kidnapping, etc. is uncomfortable. There is NO way that any father would just be hanging out, giving rides, waiting for people to call or wake up so he can talk to them about his missing daughter. He goes from lusting after the biological mom to raging against the kidnapper to relaxing in his low end motel room.
