Publisher's summary

Trouble always comes to those who court it. Rose Gardner's ability to see glimpses of the future has gotten her into hot water time and again, but so have her curiosity and her sense of daring. Those very qualities helped her defeat the most powerful man in Arkansas - a man so adept at hiding his crimes there was no way to defeat him inside of the law - but her success came at a steep personal price. Now she's throwing herself into her landscaping business, trying to live a life that's as orderly as one of her gardens.

Rose's best friend, Neely Kate, is struggling with her own losses, so when she suggests they help a local man find a missing necklace, Rose agrees. It'll give both of them a welcome distraction, and besides, it's a simple investigation. What harm could befall them? But things that should be simple rarely are. In seeking out the necklace, Rose and Neely Kate find themselves in the thick of a power struggle in the Fenton County underworld, one that could dethrone Rose's friend James Malcolm, the surprisingly moral king.

The last thing Rose should do is court more trouble, but she's not the type to step away from a friend in need - and she's also not so sure she wants an orderly life.

Don't read if you must know back stories

It's book 1 in the series, but apparently these characters have been in her earlier books. The story was good and entertaining, but I felt there were lots of holes because we'd be given a tidbit of a story about the past but never the whole thing. It was a little frustrating to me. Other people may not have this issue. Plus the story continues in the next book. I can't decide if I will read the next one, search for the old ones or just drop it.

Family Jewels

This book took an unexpected turn for me. One of the main characters developed a character trait of conjuring up visions to help her solve mysteries. At first she said that the visions came involuntarily, but then she started to bring them on herself when she needed one to help her out. This is not my genre. This story line may not affect others as it did me.

Love this new series!

I was so happy all the main characters from Rose Gardner mysteries are included in the new series. I really hope Rose and James continue to get closer. I am also happy for Jed and NK. I have read all the books on kindle but enjoy listening while in the car

Amazing!!!

I absolutely loved this book. I listened to it in just 2 days. I was on the edge of my seat and waiting for what's next. I can't wait for the next in the series. Denise set it up perfectly for many more stories to come. I love a book with a strong female character and this one has 2!

Family Jewels

Rose and Neely Kate take on a whole new adventure in this book that will have you truly wondering.. who took the necklace and why is it so important? Twists and turns, utter betrayals, and an intensified plot make this a book so good (and I mean sooo good), you won’t be able to put down. Family jewels take on multiple meanings in this new Rose Gardner book and it’s not all just sparkle and shine. Never a dull moment with Denise Grover Swank!

Not up to other works

I started reading this based on some fun and very enjoyable other books by the same author. It started out good, but then just got stupid. Returning.

Fine beginning and middle...

Good plot overall, but that ending seemed rushed. I feel like more was needed on Rose and James before the book ended. I also expected to hear more about Mason throughout the story. Not her best, hoping the next book is better.

Nothing is as it seems

Loved how Rose and Neelie Kate got involved with yet another PI adventure. They make an ordinary day full of twists and turns.

Good Start to New Arc

Now that Simmons story arc was completed in the the original Rose Gardner series, this offshoot series continues her adventures into solving mysteries. The story is compelling and has some interesting twists.

The narration is excellent as usual.

All the drama, the secrets and the revelations

I am so happy to read more about Rose and her small town life, hilarious messes, dangerous moments, and love life drama. Rose is a woman living in a nosy closed minded small southern town who is still getting over a recent breakup and trying to move on with her life. She is good hearted to a fault but she is no longer the naive, innocent woman she used to be. Rose experiences visions that she’s compelled to share with the person she has them of and just like in the previous series, Rose continues to stumble into crimes. Rose’s best friend and business partner, Neely Kate, volunteers their pseudo-investigation agency “Sparkle Investigations” to locate a missing necklace. What seems like an easy job that they can take care of in between their landscaping business turns out to be anything but. Soon Rose and Neely Kate are up to their necks in small town gossip, shenanigans, murder, and underworld machinations. In order to keep everyone she loves safe, Rose is going to have to use all her skills and live with the consequences. James, Jed, Maeve and Joe are major secondary characters as the drama unfolds. The book was well written and included witty dialogue, three dimensional characters, and an engaging storyline with sweet moments, exciting action, danger, family drama, painful pasts, mystery, plot twists, imperfect characters, missteps, and all the big feels. I am looking forward to reading what happens next in Rose’s life. While this book can be read without reading the previous series, I am glad I had a deeper back story to some of the events because of reading the previous series.

Shannon McManus did a phenomenal job narrating the story and characters into life with enough change of inflection, tone and cadence to voice multiple characters quite convincingly.
