Publisher's Summary

Trouble always comes to those who court it. Rose Gardner's ability to see glimpses of the future has gotten her into hot water time and again, but so have her curiosity and her sense of daring. Those very qualities helped her defeat the most powerful man in Arkansas - a man so adept at hiding his crimes there was no way to defeat him inside of the law - but her success came at a steep personal price. Now she's throwing herself into her landscaping business, trying to live a life that's as orderly as one of her gardens.

Rose's best friend, Neely Kate, is struggling with her own losses, so when she suggests they help a local man find a missing necklace, Rose agrees. It'll give both of them a welcome distraction, and besides, it's a simple investigation. What harm could befall them? But things that should be simple rarely are. In seeking out the necklace, Rose and Neely Kate find themselves in the thick of a power struggle in the Fenton County underworld, one that could dethrone Rose's friend James Malcolm, the surprisingly moral king.

The last thing Rose should do is court more trouble, but she's not the type to step away from a friend in need - and she's also not so sure she wants an orderly life.

Don't read if you must know back stories

It's book 1 in the series, but apparently these characters have been in her earlier books. The story was good and entertaining, but I felt there were lots of holes because we'd be given a tidbit of a story about the past but never the whole thing. It was a little frustrating to me. Other people may not have this issue. Plus the story continues in the next book. I can't decide if I will read the next one, search for the old ones or just drop it.

Love this new series!

I was so happy all the main characters from Rose Gardner mysteries are included in the new series. I really hope Rose and James continue to get closer. I am also happy for Jed and NK. I have read all the books on kindle but enjoy listening while in the car

Nothing is as it seems

Loved how Rose and Neelie Kate got involved with yet another PI adventure. They make an ordinary day full of twists and turns.

Amazing!!!

I absolutely loved this book. I listened to it in just 2 days. I was on the edge of my seat and waiting for what's next. I can't wait for the next in the series. Denise set it up perfectly for many more stories to come. I love a book with a strong female character and this one has 2!

Family Jewels

This book took an unexpected turn for me. One of the main characters developed a character trait of conjuring up visions to help her solve mysteries. At first she said that the visions came involuntarily, but then she started to bring them on herself when she needed one to help her out. This is not my genre. This story line may not affect others as it did me.

Another great book and great read

This series is addictive. Shannon McManus is so great as a narrator. I do suggest you read/listen to the Rose Gardner Mysteries first...but this plot is so great! I loved it! And will listen to it again.

I may have enjoyed this when I was 20.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Dull characters, dull plot, hated everything about it. Struggled through chapter nine only because I have a long commute and didn't have anything else downloaded. I cannot finish it.

Would you ever listen to anything by Denise Grover Swank again?

No

How did the narrator detract from the book?

She was OK, but one character referred to another as having a high squeaky voice, then used a deep overly sophisticated voice for that character.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Family Jewels?

I would leave it as is. It just was not interesting to me.

Any additional comments?

Meant for a younger female audience.

Family Jewels is a gem

I loved the story and the narrator. DGS has become my favorite in just a few weeks. I have not found a book I did not like. The story was believable and exciting did not want to put it down

Tedious AND like a bad soap opera

The story just gets lost in the incredibly annoying an ad nauseam names that you must keep track of. Brace yourself for Joe, James and Jed. Oh but sometimes James is called Skeeter. And sometimes SM. Is that supposed to be funny? The heroin is named Rose Gardner and she has, surprise, surprise a landscaping business. Then there's her business partner Bruce Wayne who's father is Clark Kent. Rose's best friends is Neely-Kate, which is a name that is spoken by the narrator every 10 seconds. It is a very much a soap opera with a back story that is constantly made reference to but never fully explained. Intensely annoying.

Took a minute

I was not aware that there were previous books with the characters so I didn’t know any of the history. Took me a little while to sort it all out but after that I really enjoyed the book!! Looking forward to the next one.

Enjoyable

If you like Denise Grover Swank or Shannon McMannus then you will definitely enjoy this. My only teeny, tiny criticism, is that I wasn't too keen on the "voice" for Neely Kate. That is personal preference though I imagine.
