Publisher's summary

Mitch Rapp and his protege, Mike Nash, may have met their match. The CIA has detected and intercepted two terrorist cells, but a third is feared to be on the loose. Led by a dangerous mastermind obsessed with becoming the leader of al-Qaeda, this determined and terrifying group is about to descend on America.

Rapp needs the best on this assignment, and Nash, who has served his government honorably for 16 years first as an officer in the Marine Corps and then as an operative in an elite counterterrorism team run by Rapp is his choice. Together, they have made careers out of meeting violence with extreme violence and have never wavered in the fight against the jihadists and their culture of death. Both have fought the war on terrorism in secret without accolades or acknowledgment of their personal sacrifices. Both have been forced to lie to virtually every single person they care about, and both have soldiered on with the knowledge that their hard work and lethal tactics have saved thousands of lives.

But the political winds have changed in America, and certain leaders on Capitol Hill are pushing to have men like Rapp and Nash put back on a short leash. And then one spring afternoon in Washington, DC, everything changes.

Using his insider knowledge of intelligence agencies and the military, Flynn once again delivers an all-too-real portrayal of a war that is that is waged every day by a handful of brave, devoted souls. Smart, fast-paced, and jaw-droppingly realistic, Extreme Measures is the political thriller of our time.

Kickass Thriller - With Politics!

I hate myself for liking this book so much.

Basically, I'm a knee-jerk liberal who hates the real life excesses of our intelligence community. And I was sort of uncomfortable with the actions of the ultra macho secret agents that populate the Flynn-iverse.

But I kept listening every chance I got and pretty soon I was making up not-so-important errands so I could listen in the car.

I've heard a couple of these Vince Flynn stories now and even though I don't think he writes the most three dimensional characters - he's just really good at crafting these plots that just rope you in and never let up.

How come they're not making these things into movies?

Mitch Rapp is the MAN

Okay. I read thrillers to be thrilled. The books don't have to be literature, they have to be entertaining!

Vince Flynn seldom disappoints at all and I have never been disappointed by a Rapp novel. The Audible versions also have voice appropriate readers that seem to have a good time reading the book.

If you like old fashioned action, where the main character still loves his country and is willing to die to defend it or his women, read these books.

If you want a book where the main character spends more time crying than solving the problems before him, you need to move along because this is not that type of book.

My First Vince Flynn Novel

This was my first Vince Flynn novel and it was teriffic!

I really enjoyed someone writing about the radical muslim world as sick and twisted without a sympathetic ear - whatsoever.

No quarter is given to the radicals in this book. This book will be a breath of fresh air for true Muslims and non-Muslims alike!

Great non-stop story that will keep you riveted. George Guidall does a great job on narration.

Best one yet

If you are fan of the Mitch Rapp character you should love this book. It is, in my opinion, the best of this series. The story is good, the characters come to life and you can't wait to turn the the page. If you have not read any of these stories. Mitch Rapp is a member of the CIA and is essentially an american version of James Bond in that he is discharged with a great deal of latitude to carry out missions in ways that are usually not politically correct. However, this story reads well and is easily followed even if this will be your first Mitch Rapp story.

Some of the previous Rapp stories have suffered from too much violence and ranting at the sacrfice of a more complex tale. However, this story does a particularly good job in weaving in politics, terrorists, bureaucrats and, of course, just a touch of romance.
You should be forwarned that this appears to be a lead in to the next book so don't expect all the loose ends to be tied up. If you get this book, be ready for the urge not to put it down until you get the end...

A Riveting Read

This book started out a little slowly. But it quickly picked up the pace, and, after that, I could not put it down. I think it is one of Flynn's best novels. George Guidall, the perfect narrator for a thriller, was excellent with his authoritative, trademark style. The ending came as a surprise, and although it was a well conceived ending, I wished the book could have gone on a bit longer.

One of the Best Audible Books Out There

I couldnt have picked a better book to get back into my Audible.com fanboyism. This is a thriller in every sense of the word and is made even better by the tremendous voice narration done by George Guidall. I hear that this is a series of books about the two characters and I look forward to not only going back and reading past novels by Vince Flynn but also reading future ones. If Extreme Measures is any indication of Flynns ability to write a great thriller, then count me in.

Discovered a new favorite author

I've been listening to audio books for quite some time, and this is the first time I've been motivated to write a review. Extreme Measures turned out to be a an Extreme Pleasure to read (listen). Take it for what it is, sit back, and enjoy. I've listened to one other Vince Flynn book and have gotten to like the characters. This book has gotten me already on the edge of my seat waiting for the next one.

It might not be your cup of tea, but I like the outlook of the characters on the G.W.O.T. (not called "overseas contingency operations"), but then again, I like Clint Eastwoods movies too. So, this is a meat and potatoes kind of book with heroes that don't have a vegan mindset on life. If you don't like red meat, this book isn't for you!

Love Vince Flynn's series

I just started to listen to Flynn a couple of months ago. I have now listened to every one of them! I'm addicted to Mitch Rapp. I wonder in my mind what he would look like. I guess that's a woman thing but I do enjoy the books. I don't even mind the cursing... It's just real life and if you don't think so then your head is in the sand. I can't wait until is next one is out. October for the book...not sure about the audio.

To Torture or not to Torture, that is the question

And Flynn leaves no doubt where he comes down on the question. "Extreme measures" are always justified, and anyone who disagrees is a wrong thinking, empty headed, naive moron living a life of ease built on the sacrifice of the strong willed, steely eyed saviors who are willing to ignore the rule of law. Flynn takes a difficult moral dilemma and resolves it in favor of allowing anyone with the goal of "protecting the innocent victim and the American way" do anything they feel justified in doing.
A fairly glaring example of Flynn's rather shallow analysis of the issue comes when Flynn alleges that the FBI wouldn't hesitate to infiltrate a Baptist Church to seek out terrorists but won't infiltrate a Mosque. I don't know how old Flynn is, but I can remember the days when the FBI did infiltrate Baptist Churches in search of the minions of that dangerous subversive Martin Luther King. Dozens (hundreds?) of steely eyed saviors followed the illegal orders of J. Edgar Hoover to spy on Americans who questioned the Viet Nam war or who believed that the time had long since come to address the treatment of African Americans in this country. Following those glory days, Congress did revisit the issue of domestic spying and asked hard questions about how we protect this nation without sacrificing the principles that make it unique. This is a nuanced issued, and, with apologies to Mitch Rapp, not everyone desiring to employ "Extreme Measures" is a "God Damned American Hero."

As far as the book, it is a fair story well told. However, I did not think that the blow-off lived up to the hype. I expected a lot of action in the closing chapters, and the attacks seemed hardly worth the trouble. It was almost like Flynn got bored with his story and just wanted to wind it up. If I could give it 2.5 stars, I would. But it isn't worth 3.
