Publisher's Summary

Medical examiner Dr. Annabelle Schwartzman was not meant to be idle, which is why she's back at a murder scene even while reeling from recent chemotherapy treatments. Having undergone a double mastectomy, all she wants to do is dive back into her medical examiner job. It's a gruesome world, yet Schwartzman takes comfort in its science and precision.

But the crime she's dealing with brings her right back to the cancer ward: the victim is her own oncologist, dead from ingesting the very chemical used to fight her disease. Now, Schwartzman and homicide inspector Hal Harris must figure out why and stop the culprit before he can act again.

For Schwartzman, the case becomes even more personal. Her abusive ex, Spencer, who's in prison and seemingly out of the picture, is never far from Annabelle's mind. But to solve the mystery behind the death of the doctor who saved her life, she's got to put aside everything else.

Not a stand alone; listen to Exhume first!

Unless author Danielle Girard decides the expand this two novel series (and she likely will), the San Francisco Police Medical Examiner Dr. Annabelle Schwartzman series is complete.

Excise is difficult to classify. It is a serial murder mystery. It is also a psychological thriller as Dr. Schwartzman's murdering ex-husband Spencer McDonald is seeking to find and kill her as she tries to evade him. Finally, it is a medical thriller a Dr. Schwartzmen fights for her life against a late stage breast cancer. The situation is complex!

Compared to Exhume, the first novel in the series, Excise has less suspense related to the psychological aspects. I did not like Excise as much as Exhume which I rated 5 stars, yet Excise is an excellent novel. Shannon McManus does a great job of narration of this worthwhile series.

Ok

I’m a little tired of the same story line. I wish they would move on past Spencer. I’m not sure that I’m going to be interested in the next book

what next?

While struggling with chemo from her double mastectomy Schwartzman continues her work for the San Francisco Police Department. There are several unexplained murders with strange connections that seem like a serial killer and yet that doesn't make sense. At the same time, simmering always in the background is the strong possibility of her abusive ex husband walking out of jail even though we know that he has committed at least three murders. Dr. Schwartzman refuses to testify because when the question of evidence being planted she would perjure herself. I couldn't put this book down.

Pretty good. I found it at times slow.

The narrator was good. The story was at times slow. I would read a sequel.

Would be a good creepy, OMG, bit of romance movie

There has to be a follow-up. The ending screams for it. And so does the new house. It’s almost like a modern version of a Victorian mystery with a touch of horror.

Breast Cancer and Murder—Lots To Deal With

This is a very timely book. Annabelle Schwartzman discovered she had breast cancer at the end of the first book, Exhume. She also thought that she had put her ex-husband Spencer Macdonald in jail forever. But, he is in jail but struggling to get out and get to her again. She did have breast cancer and this book opens with her undergoing chemo for a double mastectomy. It is an honest story and she continues to work while undergoing the treatment. Hal, her dependable Inspector, is there for her but she as usual thinks she can do everything herself. She thinks that to let anyone into her life will just make them vulnerable to Spencer. The murders in this story center around a cancer treatment center, and involve her own oncologist and surgeon. A very good book and moves at a fast pace. I did get tired of having her constantly beat herself up over it being her fault that her ex got to everyone in her life. The one twist that is not explained is why her own mother is under Spencer’s influence and visits him in jail. More will be revealed in Book 3 but I’d love to find out sooner than a year from now. But, good things take time. If you like murder mysteries with lots of interesting characters you’ll love this series. The books do stand alone but like all series, it is better to begin with Book 1 so you can totally understand the evil of Spencer MacDonald. I listened on audible and read on Kindle. Love the fact that with Kindle Unlimited you get access to both book types. The narrator Shannon McManus was excellent.

A little bag of tricks

Good tale and page turning stuff all the way through , however the ending is a cliff hanger. Plenty of excitement and twists in the story line but without a book 3 I'm left feeling non-plussed.
