Publisher's summary

New York Times best-selling author of The Good Girl Mary Kubica is back with another exhilarating thriller as a widow's pursuit of the truth leads her to the darkest corners of the psyche.

Clara Solberg's world shatters when her husband and their four-year-old daughter are in a car crash, killing Nick while Maisie is remarkably unharmed. The crash is ruled an accident - until the coming days, when Maisie starts having night terrors that make Clara question what really happened on that fateful afternoon.

Tormented by grief and her obsession that Nick's death was far more than just an accident, Clara is plunged into a desperate hunt for the truth. Who would have wanted Nick dead? And, more important, why? Clara will stop at nothing to find out - and the truth is only the beginning of this twisted tale of secrets and deceit.

Told in the alternating perspectives of Clara's investigation and Nick's last months leading up to the crash, master of suspense Mary Kubica weaves her most chilling thriller to date - one that explores the dark recesses of a mind plagued by grief and shows that some secrets might be better left buried.

Distracted by female narrator

I was excited to see something new from Mary Kubica, but for some reason I couldn't get past the female narrator's pronunciation. I'm sure I should get over it, but it was like nails on a chalkboard every time she said a word ending in -ing. "Listenine, watchine, textine". Ugh, I wish I could listen without hearINE that every 2 minutes.

Pure Kubica style

I enjoyed this book. It was very much the same style as the other Kubica books ( I've read them all to date). I wasn't sure who to root for or who to believe until the very end of the book. Most things were wrapped up pretty nicely, though, I did have a couple of questions that went unresolved.
I felt that Carly Robbins characterization of Clara was overdramatic. There wasn't any room left for her to build as she became more sleep deprived and verging on crazy. Other reviewer's commented on the unlikable character of Clara, but I just kept in mind that she had delivered a brand new baby four days prior and lost her husband abruptly. He had so many secrets that I might've gone a little crazy, too!

Loved this book

I haven’t left a full review before, but I loved listening to this book and felt I needed to share! The author used extensive repetitive narrative with the main character, who is the widow, and I loved it. It made the widow seem more real in her grief, as she became more and more crazed, trying to figure out who may have caused the accident that killed her husband. Not only did the author’s style of writing make the storyline easier to follow, it made it more interesting.

Liked it

I really liked the story but the end is a little too quick to come. Wish there had been more of an explanation for Clara to understand what happened to Maize.

Not the best

Too contrived and too much detail and repetition made it a slow go. Soap oper-y in my opinion.

Struggle to finish

Clara is an infuriating character jumping from one far fetched conclusion to the next based on very little and ignoring things right in front of her. I was struggling to finish the book the closer to the end because I was increasingly annoyed by Clara's antics and irrational thoughts and behaviors. The ending was a lot of build up for something so anticlimactic.

Frustrating.

I loved her other books but this one is a miss. Too much descriptive language that interrupts the story instead of enhancing it.
Narration could’ve been better.

Wow! The is a simple story of love, the importance of honesty and what might have been. Poignant and true. Absolutely fantastic narrations. Beautiful epilogue.

Terrible reader

The readers voice is sooooo irritating! Wow. I wouldn’t recommend it. It gets in the way of the story.

Mixed feelings

A bit slow but speeds up at the end - very similar to other Mary Kubica books.
