Publisher's summary

Evan Evans is a young police constable who has traded in the violence of city life for idyllic Llanfair, a Welsh village tucked far away from trouble. Nestled among the Snowdonia mountain range, Llanfair looks to Constable Evans like a town forgotten by time, but he quickly learns that even the bucolic countryside has its share of eccentric - and deadly - characters. Evans' new neighbors include two competitive ministers vying for the souls of their flock, one lascivious barmaid, and three other Evanses: Evan-the-Meat, Evans-the-Milk, and Evans-the-Post (whose favorite hobby is to read the mail before he delivers it).

Before Evans has time to sort through the complicated relationships and rivalries of his new home, he's called to the scene of a crime as brutal and fearsome as any he encountered in the big city. Two hikers have been murdered on the trails of the local mountain, and Evans must hunt down a vicious killer - who may or may not be linked to the mysterious destruction of Mrs. Powell-Jones' prize-winning tomatoes.

Evans Above is the first novel in Rhys Bowen's popular Constable Evans Mystery Series.

Great book, not as great sound quality

I liked this book but struggled with the narration. The narrator had a pleasant voice, but it modulated between a whisper and a normal speaking tone several times in a sentence. It was difficult to hear the whispered parts, and I had to keep backing up.
That being said, I love this writer's style and way with words, and will look for more of her works.

Not my favorite.

I absolutely love Rhys Bowen and have listened to many of her books and series. This first book in this series wasn’t a favorite of mine. Even though the narrator was awesome, his voice was so low and soft that even after turning up the volume fully on my phone and Bluetooth speaker, it was never really loud enough for me. The story itself was good and easy to follow but it wasn’t a great listen like many of her other books. Will I listen to the other books in this series? Maybe. But I’m not in a hurry.

Found a new favorite series.

Loved this series. Can't wait for the next one. Went too quickly, couldn't turn it off and get other things done.

Everything You "Know" is Likely Wrong

An excellent multi-layered tale of mysteries run amuck in Wales.

The characters are well crafted and multifaceted. The season's haul of red herring, some of them covering others, and half of them in the reader's own mind.

Mr. Clark's narration is perfect. A Welsh bard relating an epic story. It's wonderful hearing Welsh names pronounced correctly for a change.

I can't wait to listen to more books in the series.

Good cozy

I liked this book. It had a great plot & quite a lot of twists and turns. Kept me guessing until the end . I had a clue at one point & dropped it. I don't want to give any thing else in fear of giving away to much. I loved the characters. This is my 1st purchase of the series so will be getting more. You don't need to read them in order . They stand alone just fine but the characters info has something missing that you can tell was in a previous book.

Very enjoyable

I'm just a dumb American with basically no knowledge of Welsh history or culture, but that didn't prevent me from enjoying this delightful story. The characters we well developed and relatable and the plot had plenty of twists and turns to keep me guessing "who dunnit" right up until the end. And the touch of romance was very tastefully handled, unlike so much of the smut that is out there today. I look forward to reading the next book in the series and am rooting for the school teacher to steal Evan's heart.
