Publisher's summary

Marooned on Cumberland Island National Seashore off the coast of Georgia, Anna finds time weighing heavily as she waits out a 21-day assignment on fire detail. When the sudden plane crash in the inland palmetto thickets calls her and the other members of the fire crew to action, the flames are quickly extinguished. But suspicions smolder over the cause of the accident which killed both the pilot and his passenger, Cumberland's lone law enforcement ranger.

The tightly-knit island society begins to seethe with hushed accusations. As tensions escalate, Anna and crew find themselves pressed service. Though the "experts" are called in to evaluate the crash, Anna can't let the investigation rest solely in their hands. Her inquiry causes her to stumble into shady dealings that question the integrity - and honor - of her own crew. Cumberland Island has no fences or alarm systems to guard its cherished goods, only the eyes and ears of a handful of determined rangers. But will protecting the island come at a price even Anna is unwilling to pay?

Critic reviews

"As usual, Barr is best at creating believable scenes of action in a setting that is beautifully detailed but never romanticized." (Amazon.com review)

Story is good.

I wish I could’ve gotten this book unabridged, very disappointed with that. The narrator for this book was also not my favorite. She spoke way too fast and was very monotone. All the characters had the same voice. I hope she doesn’t read any of the other books. I guess I’m glad it was short so I didn’t have to listen to her very long.

Abridged version so-so

Cindy Willians makes a good Shirley (Laverne and Shirley) but not a great audio book narrator. Also, the abridgment if this book made it far less comprehensible.

Story was good would've preferred unabridged

Didn't particularly care for the reader. I always love Nevada Barr, but this reader sadly took some of the enjoyment out of the story.

Not my favorite novel

I’ve enjoyed the Anna Pigeon series, but not this one. The narrator had little inflection in her voice and read it too fast. I had to force myself to finish the book hoping it would improve. The story line was just ok. I didn’t even care how it ended.

WORST NARRATOR EVER!!

I couldn't even get past the third chapter. The narrator is exceptionally difficult to listen to. Demonstrates no ability to modulate her voice to the different characters or nuances in the story. Sounds like she is on a race to get to the end. I'm very disappointed, but I just cannot listen to any more of her horrible narration. Why would anyone choose her over Barbara Rosenblatt for a narrator!

Not as good as the other Anna Pigeon books

What does Cindy Williams bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Cindy Williams did a good job but Barbara Rosenblat is Anna Pigeon for me and it is not as good with another voice.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

yes. It might be better as a movie because listening to it I felt that I never really could get my bearings on this island.

Any additional comments?

I did not enjoy this book as much as the other Anna Pigen books which is possibly because the others I have listened to were unabridged and this one was abridged. I just never really got into the story.

Couldn’t get through it due to narrator

I love Nevada Bar’s Anna Pigeon series but I couldn’t get through listening to this one because of the narrator. She spoke in a fast monotone voice like she was quickly reading a newspaper paragraph to someone next to her with no feeling or emotion or inflection. It made me not care about the story she was reading. I’ll have to read the paperback version myself and go back to audiobook with the next one.

Intriguing story

I love Nevada Barr's writing style. Unfortunately, the narrator spoke too fast to enjoy it! There were so many characters, it was hard to keep track with the audio at warp speed.

Narrator?

Is this the same Cindy Williams whoin played Shirley? She sounded like she was trying to rush back to TV. This gets my vote as the most unbearable narration. Cindy is to storytelling as Sandra Bernhart is to acting. Bad!
