too many characters and too many stories

The many stories within this book were like a collection of short stories. The stories were full of interesting characters and scenes well described so I had a good picture in my mind. However the stories did not knit very well together to give the reader a believable and absorbing who done it and why. There is very little written about Amber's Stepmother and nothing to help the reader understand why she was the type of person that would resort to murder...it seemed a little extreme. Other villains were much more believable. Still I enjoyed the drama in the final chapters when Mary was born and not given away and Bal rescued Hannah
