Publisher's summary

The Cincinnati detectives question everything they know - and everyone they trust - in the new novel of romantic suspense from New York Times best-selling author Karen Rose.

Homicide detective Adam Kimble is no stranger to battling demons. But Meredith Fallon is a different kind of weakness: one that could actually be good for him, if only he would let himself depend on her. Meredith has loved Adam for a year, and seeing how hard he's worked to deal with his PTSD makes her feelings only stronger, but she respects his needs. Her work keeps her busy anyway: She counsels sexually abused women like Mallory Martin to help them reintegrate into the world. But someone doesn't want Meredith helping women like Mallory, and Meredith finds herself in the crosshairs of a very determined killer. Adam would risk anything for her, but they'll soon find out she isn't the only target.

Karen Rose crafts another tale...

Three teens in foster care. Two boys and a girl. The girl gets raped by the foster father.
A 6 year old child is seeing a child psychologist. The father is afraid she knows something about his illegal activities. Two other psychologists have already quit working with the girl. The third will not.
A young man wearing a suicide vest and holding a gun is forced to enter a restaurant to kill the third psychologist but he disables the vest and warns her instead. Someone outside shoots and kills him when the vest fails. He had been one of the three foster children.
The girl who was raped by her foster father is now in another predicament that includes rape and abuse. And now someone wants her dead. And she wants them.
The last of the three foster children is now in college. When he hears of his friend's death he goes to Cincinnati where all this is taking place. He goes to the police and meets the woman his friend was supposed to kill. Lots of guilt for abandoning his friends. But maybe there's redemption.
Generally there's no guessing with books by Karen Rose. She points you in a direction and really fleshes out that character, the bad and the worse personality traits. She also runs a romance story parallel to the suspense. For me that part is ok but I am not into romance stories so I usually fast forward through. The suspense part is the majority of the book and makes it worthwhile for me.
Hillary Huber does an excellent job narrating.
If you have never read anything by Karen Rose I HIGHLY RECOMMEND all of her books.

Suspenseful

I listen in my car and would often take the long way home just so I wouldn’t have to stop.

Wowzers!!

This series was one of the best suspense series I’ve ever had the pleasure of listening to. I don’t want it to end. I need a Danni and Diesel book. And Tripp and one for Lieutenant Eisenhower !! ❤️❤️❤️

Hard to put down

These are not standalone stories. At a minimum, you need to at least start with the first book in the books tagged as Cincinnati, ideally beginning from the first book in the larger series. You will NOT understand the underpinnings of the stories. It matters.

Meredith Fallon takes Mallory Martin out to lunch to celebrate her first day out since being rescued four months ago after being held captive for six years. She’s signed up for adult education classes, a major step towards taking control of her life after months of therapy. However, what happens at that café is just the beginning of a killing spree that confounds law enforcement and the targets are unclear.

These books may be long (24 hours of listening) but it’s just so delicious to come back to them for a few days. I hate putting them down and this one is no different. I remembered from the last story that an important element (or person) was left dangling after Mallory’s abductor was taken down and was hoping it would be resolved here. Thankfully it was, which made this such a chilling story. We also, finally, learn what’s been going on with Adam Kimball...why he was so obnoxious to his cousin Deacon and put distance between Meredith and himself. Even more thrilling is we don’t know the identity of the leader, even an alias name, throughout until the big reveal. Loved that. Everything worked here from the mystery, suspense, and thrills to the romance and family dynamics.

I can’t believe I’ve finally caught up, not something I set as a goal because I’ve liked knowing I could read one whenever I wanted. Rose is the best in this genre, one of my auto-buy authors and this book is just another reason why. The return of so many earlier characters just sweetened the experience. And, Hillary Huber’s narration was excellent. Now, my wait begins for the next release. 4.5 stars

Thrilling

I think this is my favorite out of all of Karen Rose’s titles. It is fast paced and keeps you guessing throughout the entire book. Figuring out “who dunnit” is the best part. I highly recommend.

Another fabulous story!!

Karen Rose continues with a cat if characters that will become like old friends you worry and cheer for!! The story is riveting and complex and, as usual, she created a villain that is equally complex and always a surprise!! It is truly amazing how this author weaves an intricate mystery that the reader can follow, clues that make sense and can be pieced together, but continues to remain a mystery until she decides to reveal him!! Bravo!! Also, continual praise for narrator Hillary Huber who lends fabulous narration, a huge range of character choices that are believable as both genders!!

Loved this series

I loved how the story line evolved and connected all the characters. Don't be put off by the length of the audiobook, it is worth every hour. The only complaint I have with the performance is that the voice of Meredith and Dani seemed to switch from the previous books.
