Everyone is always telling Stone Barrington that he’s too smart to be a cop, but it’s pure luck that places him on the streets in the dead of night, just in time to witness the horrifying incident that turns his life inside out. Suddenly he is on the front page of every New York newspaper and his life is hopelessly entwined in the increasingly shocking life (and perhaps death) of Sasha Nijinsky, the country’s hottest and most beautiful television anchorwoman.
Stone Barrington is back in action - and back in the line of fire - in the newest thriller from perennial fan favorite and number-one New York Times best-selling author Stuart Woods.
Forced into early retirement at 37, smart, attractive, and fiercely independent Major Holly Barker trades in her bars as a military cop for the badge of deputy chief of police in Orchid Beach, Florida. But below the sunny surface of this sleepy, well-to-do island town lies an evil that escalates into the cold-blooded murder of one of Holly's new colleagues.
When President Kate Lee calls Stone Barrington to Washington on an urgent matter, it's soon clear that a potentially disastrous situation requires the kind of help more delicate than even he can provide...and he knows just the right man for the job. Teddy Fay: ex-CIA, master of disguise, and a gentleman not known for abiding by legal niceties in the pursuit of his own brand of justice.
Successful movie producer Wolf Willett is stunned when he sees his own death reported in a major newspaper. It says he was a victim in a triple homicide during a sordid tryst with his wife and a friend. But who is the unidentified corpse? Why can't Wolf remember anything about the night in question? And who wants him dead?
Rick Barron, a sharp, capable detective on the Beverly Hills force, finds himself demoted after a run-in with a superior officer, but he soon lands a job other cops only dream about: the security detail for Centurion Pictures, one of the hottest studios in the midst of Hollywood's golden age of the late 1930s. As the protector of the studio's interests, Barron looks after the elite of filmdom's stars - among them Clete Barrow, a British leading man with a penchant for parties, and Glenna Gleason, a peach of a talent on the verge of stardom.

When Stone Barrington embarks on a trip to Bel-Air to check in on some business and personal concerns, he expects a relaxing break from the fast pace and mean streets of New York. But trouble never takes a vacation, and it has a way of finding Stone. A case that had seemingly been resolved has returned in full force - with lethal results. And this deadly situation makes for strange bedfellows when Stone finds himself teamed with the least likely ally…a gentleman of unique abilities, who can fly below the radar and above the law.
From the high-stakes poker tables of Las Vegas to California's lush beachside resorts, the trail of disguise, subterfuge, and murder leads to a shocking conclusion.
I have always enjoyed this series and this was better than the last two. But it is becoming a little annoying to have everything always perfect. The kids are perfect. The women are perfect. Stone is perfect. Even real rich people aren't this perfect. I'd love to see the old Stone again.....the non rich one on the edge of the society page. Accepted by the beautiful people without actually being one of them. Tony Roberts was excellent as usual. Good to see Teddy back. I always liked that character. But this time even Teddy was perfect!

One of the better Stuart Woods(Stone Barrington) efforts. He left the bedroom scenes up to our imaginations for which I am grateful. He writes fun ,entertaining detective stories and Tony Roberts is a brilliant narrator. I must admit I would enjoy more New York and more Gino. If some of you were disappointed in the ("hack writing") your words, not mine, I suggest you try a different genre. Perhaps the writings of Tolstoy or Dostoyevsky. I have enjoyed these authors as well. With Stuart Woods you know in advance you are in for entertaining escapism. No more,no less. Pick your favorite genre and enjoy!

Fool me three times and I'm done. after years of loving this series I gave it one more shot after last two duds. mistake. Either someone else is now writing the books, or someone else SHOULD be. No charm, no point, and embarrassing focus on conspicuous consumption of jets, hangars, luxury goods that made me cringe. Tragic whimper of an end to a once beloved series. Keep your happy memories of early Stone Barrington. (Tony Roberts' narration wonderful as always - is he ageless?? Which just made me sadder) a cynical return to a now-dry well...

This is my second time and I enjoyed again . Now I remember how Teddy was wrought into the books
really good especially enjoy the performer. his ability to use different voices without taking away from the story. good story and adventure. If you like Stuart woods you will like this one.
stone is getting boring in his old age. need to spice it up and bring the old stone back.
loved this story. couldnt stop listening. should be made into a movie. very interesting plot.
Another well told Stone Barrington novel. I like how Woods is beginning to add the kids in so they can maybe take over the series in the future.
Love this Stone Barrington novel. It kept me on the edge from beginning to end.
This is my second favorite in the series. Having Teddy come across Peter was a nice way of bringing Stone and Teddy to work together. This had all the stuff Stuart Woods is good at! Heart pounding, toe curling and screaming "Yes"!!!
Thank you Mr. Woods
