A lovely read

Peter Lovesey was a new discovery for me, and I immediately listened to the other books available on Audible. Wish there were more!! The characters are well developed and complex, the plot moves right along, and there's a human quality to the entire enterprise.

A Mystery of Many Layers Right to the End

This is the most outstanding entry yet in the fine series featuring Peter Diamond, a beautifully told, highly engaging story with shocks, twists and turns and stories within the story. I just wish Audible carried more of the series, and that I encountered this narrator Steve Hodson more often. He delivers a range of distinctive voices and accents, which bring characters fully to life. The author Lovesey created a rich and compelling character in Diamond, distinctive for his very human flaws. Nothing pat about the characters or the story, unlike the formulaic approach of lesser mystery/crime fiction writers. But while some of the Diamond novels have been thinner (such as Bloodhounds) this is substantial and satisfying.

No Shakespeare here please

Any additional comments?

This is an important part of the Diamond series as it goes through a turbulent period of the detective's life. Unfortunately it is not read by the narrator who does the bulk of the later books (Simon Prebble) who does an excellent job with character voices and especially the West Country accents (to my USA ears). I have heard Steve Hodson before and he has done some creditable work in other readings but his obvious Shakespearean trained voice does not do him any credit in this reading, and I found that it was grating to listen to.

The story has a number of twists and turns and misdirections, which may or may not fool the readers. In particular, the last several chapters attempts to misdirect the readers in a rather blatant fashion and drags the book out way more than necessary. Otherwise it is a very good read.

*possible spoiler alert*
Just skip ahead to the confrontation scene when you figure out what's going on.

How I wish Simon Prebble had narrated this.

Brilliant book. Heartfelt and great mystery. Narrator isn't as bad as Michael Healy but he's no Simon Prebble either. Prebble brings Diamond to life. Here he's just more narration. Please bring back Prebble.

Really? They killed off his wife?

I found the depressing aspect of investigating your wife's murder too hard to take. I also didn't like the long timeframe of the story--it lasts months. I like other books in the series a lot better.

Well paced and easy to follow. Good audible book

Not full of huge surprises, but an entertaining read and good narration. I would look at another book by this author/narrator combination.

Always A Fan Of Peter Lovesey

Would you listen to Diamond Dust again? Why?

I move on. So many books, so little time.

If you’ve listened to books by Peter Lovesey before, how does this one compare?

Excellent. They keep my attention and the character is so smart but so exasperating. Our hero has many foibles, but you are rooting for him all along. I think those of us who worked for politically motivated sorts, can commiserate with our hero. I have loved all Mr. Lovesy's books.

Have you listened to any of Steve Hodson’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Don't really know. I chose books based on the author and subject matter. I really don't recall bad narrators. They are professionals and do audition.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Never. I have a real life.

Any additional comments?

Looking forward to all of the other Lovesy books in my wish list. The narrator is good, so, Nothing but anticipation here.

Lovesey is hit and miss. This is a miss.

You'll have to try to pretend you don't see it coming because, well Helen Keller saw this coming.

Cliffhanger to the very last chapter! Excellent!

I really enjoyed this book. We see the human side of Peter Diamond as he deals with tragic news, and soldiers on. The plot twists and false trails are well-laid and keep you guessing to the end. Narration was top-notch, again adding extra value to a thrilling tale!

This is another audio book I will enjoy listening to again!

One of the best stories

A great story from Peter Lovesey; very emotional and exciting. Among the top 5 of stories on my ladder. I wish that it were performed by Mr. Prebble, though, one of the best performers on circuit.
