Publisher's summary
For four years, Kate Marshall has been grieving the loss of her husband and their three-year-old son in a boating accident. But when she spots a familiar-looking child on an escalator in the mall, she is convinced it is the son she thought was dead. With police skeptical of her story, she turns to private investigator Connor Sullivan. The former Secret Service agent is dubious but agrees to investigate. Digging into the case he discovers that the incident may have been no accident at all. But if Kate's son is alive, someone is intent on keeping him hidden - and may be willing to go to lethal lengths to protect a sinister secret. As Irene Hannon's many fans have come to expect, Deceived is filled with complex characters, unexpected twists, and a riveting plot line that accelerates to an explosive finish.

Me and the legendary Zimmerman twins - it's a friendship made in geek heaven. And it all started back when I worked for the NSA... My best friend Basia dragged me to the beach for her idea of a vacation. All those annoying people, sand in embarrassing places - not exactly R & R for a girl who doesn't like the sun, the ocean, or bathing suits. I couldn't wait to get back to work. But things started looking up when I ran into Elvis and Xavier Zimmerman. We discovered we had a lot in common: gaming, anchovies, hacking.

Wonderful!
Would you consider the audio edition of Deceived to be better than the print version?
I did not read the print version. I have been listening to Audible books for over 2 years now. No looking back. Holding a book hurts my hands, so listening is best for me and we travel a lot. Listening in the car for five hours at a time helps make the trip seem shorter.
What did you like best about this story?
We love Irene Hannon's books. They have suspense and keep us on the edge of our seats. We love that she is a woman of faith and she keeps it in the telling of her stories. The main character knew things were amiss in the investigation of the death of her husband and son so the ending was very surprising.
Have you listened to any of Kate Baldwin’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
She keeps the characters interesting and the plot intriguing.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Kate Baldwin is a very good narrator and she keeps you interested in the story.
Any additional comments?
I don't want to give the story away if you haven't read or listened to it yet. I love that when I read or listen to this author there will be no bad language or sex scenes. But in no way are they boring, preachy, or uninteresting!

A nice ride
Any additional comments?
I must say that I quite enjoyed this book. The story was well crafted and the characters well drawn. The only negatives for me, were the religious references and the character of the kidnapper who was on one hand portrayed as a nice guy and good father figure and on the other as a murderer and child stealer who was intent on murdering again. I think a more interesting and evil character could have been developed, which would have made the story more interesting, rather than the Mr "ordinary nice guy" that had simply lost the plot when his own son died. I'm not sure why this book commanded so many 5/5 scores. I have read far better mystery/thrillers that commanded this type of score, but alas they don't come by that often. In summary, an OK read.

Great Story, but . . .
Irene Hannon always writes a great story, and this one was no exception. Narration was stilted and mostly unemotional, a disservice to Hannon's excellent plot and charming characters. I'll listen to another Irene Hannon book in the future, but only if it's got a better narrator.

This was a good mystery with a touch of romance to it. I sincerely appreciate that this author wrote a book that was clean. No profane language, and no porn in it. That was a breath of fresh air for me.

Fast-paced story. Very good narration.
What made the experience of listening to Deceived the most enjoyable?
This was my first book by Irene Hannon and I thoroughly enjoyed the story and appreciated the well-performed narration. I listened to this in my car and would find myself looking forward to long drives so that I could progress further with the story.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
The plot was captivating from the first chapter as the lead character suffered the loss of her husband and child. The book, however, did not dwell on the loss but rather focused on the recovery of the mother and the strides she made to move on with life. Of course, when, four years later, she saw a child in a mall who greatly resembled the son she thought was dead, the heroine was presented with a dilemma...to pursue her instincts or accept the evidence that her child was dead. Her handling of the situation and the gradual development of her relationship with the private detective hired to assist her made for a very fast read. I thoroughly enjoyed the manner in which the author switched between the lives of the mother/heroine and the child whom she suspected might be her own. The writing was direct, interesting and without the unnecessary foul language found in many suspense novels. Memorable characters and an interesting plot made for a great listening experience.
What does Kate Baldwin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Kate Baldwin did an excellent job with the narration of both male, as well as female, characters in this novel. I have listened to many audio books and I know that narration can either 'make or break' the book. In this case, the narrator enhanced the story and brought to life the various characters as she gave memorable renditions of each character in the novel. Truly good work by Kate Baldwin. Good enough that I will look for more books performed by this very fine narrator.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Just as she begins to recover from the devastating loss of her husband and young son in a tragic boating accident, a mother's life is shaken as she spots a young boy who looks, and sounds, like the son she laid to rest.

I feel deceived
The story has to much romance, I don’t mind some but...Then it had too much about God. I believe in the Great Spirit but I don’t need it in a story. I did have good content in all. Would I recommend to a friend, no.

Deceived
A wonderful suspenseful book and outstanding series. It was nice to see the older characters and Kate was a nice addition as well. The narrative was top notch. As always I look forward to new books by this author.

Disappointed
They used a different narrator in book 3 of this series. That was a big mistake!! This narrator is very hard to listen to. I wish they had used the same person from books 1-2.
