Publisher's Summary

Returning from a disappointing foreign holiday, police constable Hamish Macbeth is worried. He learns that a newcomer, Catriona Beldame, is regarded as a witch and various men have been seen visiting her. Hamish himself is charmed by her until he finds out that she has been supplying dangerous potions. At first the villagers won't listen to him, saying that the loveless Hamish has turned against all women.

When Beldame is found murdered and her home set ablaze, he must clear his own name and then work to solve yet another murder to bring peace and quiet back to his beloved village. His investigations are complicated by a romance with a female forensic expert. Perhaps the Scotish Highlands' most stubborn bachelor will get married at last!

Very fun listen

For what this book is, it is very enjoyable. The narrator is fantastic, and the book was fun to listen to. For people who love British narrators, and light mysteries, I recommend it!

Back door!

I came to this series via this book, which happens to be the back door (# 25 in the Hamish Macbeth series. Enjoyable characters, but it is clear that there are established relationships that you don't have the background on. I enjoyed this one enough to try and track down more of this series. The narrator was a good choice for this book.

Mystery and Charm in Northern Scotland

In this well-read, charmingly accented recording, Beaton's appealing characters become more engaging. I feel that I would recognize Hamish Macbeth if I passed him on the street.

The narrator really makes the story

As I've said before, Mr. Malcolm IS, repeat, IS Hamish MacBeth. And the character of MacBeth makes even a less than spectacular story worth my anticipation.

A fun read!

Hamish is a great character that can, at times, be charming, impish... even romantic and touching... but always makes me laugh out loud! Characters that make me sad to come to the end of a story, but glad that is a series so there is more to come!

Yawn!

They should have called this Death of a Listener. It bored me to death. I could not wait for it to end and it is a relatively short audiobook. I bought it because it has over 4 stars. Seriously? But this is part of a larger series and maybe if I had started with book 1? That is not going to happen now. I guess this is just 'not my cup of tea'.

"Witch" not as good as others in the series

Would you be willing to try another book from M. C. Beaton? Why or why not?

Yes, I like the MacBeth series. However Audible.com does not have all of them, so there are gaps in the continuity.

What about Graeme Malcolm’s performance did you like?

He is the best reader for this series.

Was Death of a Witch worth the listening time?

Yes, but not as much as others.

Entertaining

Hamish Macbeth constable of Lochdubh with the colorfull towns people is a wonderful change of the more modern mysteries. I was able to get faces the people and town by watching the videos which you can only find at Netlix.

M C Beaton Does It Again

I love the Hamish Macbeth series. The characters, the humour, the plot make for a great escape into a wonderful gentle world that you wish really existed.
