Publisher's summary

Emma Lovett leaves her philandering husband and crosses the country to begin her teaching career at a high school in Pinewood, Colorado. There, she meets Leslie Parker, a fellow teacher given to quoting Shakespeare to fit all situations, and the two become fast friends.

Arriving at work early one morning, Emma discovers the body of the school custodian, a man who reminds her of her late father. When the police struggle to find the killer, the ladies decide to help solve the murder. Their efforts lead them to a myriad of suspects: the schizophrenic librarian, the crude football coach, the mysterious social studies teacher, and even Emma's new love interest.

As Emma Lovett discovers the perils of teaching high school, she and Leslie learn more than they ever wanted to know about the reasons people kill.

Death by Diploma

Death by Diploma: Chalkboard Outlines, Book 1
: Kelley Kaye

A first book in what will hopefully be a series. As a high school employee. I found the setting and situations were spot on. The teacher who is a "Grammar Nazi," yes every school has at least one. The gourmet teacher meals are a dream come true. I loved the librarian wanting to ban some students for life, yep may have known one..............no not really.I would like to see our principal zipping around on a skateboard.

I loved the teachers quest to solve the murder, all the novels mentioned, but could of done without Shakespeare quotes.

I look forward to the next book or books yet to come!
The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed. Angie Hickman makes this listen extra enjoyable.

Average

This is an average cozy mystery with typical characters and a typical plot. It took me a while to finish it. I might get the next book in this series if I don't have anything else to read.

Cozy mystery done well :)

This is a very cozy mystery indeed! I loved the southern drawl Angie Hickman gave the heroine, and Melvin's love story was soooo romantic. Kinda in parallel to the Romeo and Juliet the kids were performing in class.

Two details that bug me: The title sort of doesn't fit the story, and there were a tad too many Shakespeare quotes. When will someone start quoting Brandon Sanderson or IT Crowd? I'm waiting patiently ;) The trouble with Shakespeare is that he did say some amazing stuff, but you have to painstakingly translate everything to modern language. We all should like him, but it's just too much trouble - especially when there's so much other great authors to read - in a language we actually understand. Kelley Kaye being one of them, I'm sure :)

This is a wonderful little story that I recommend to you heartily.

A interesting and Incredibly satisfying Mystery

This was a fun mystery! A cute and sassy lady who really seems to get caught up in finding the villain! So many suspects and so little time to do both jobs! I look forward to the next adventure.

Fun, intelligent and witty

Where does Death by Diploma rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This book is in the top 10% of the mysteries I've listened to.

What did you like best about this story?

I loved the humor and intelligent references to English, teaching and Shakespeare. It was fun and smart.

Which scene was your favorite?

The scene I most remember is the one where the light bulb fell on her cheek as she tried to extract it from the smoke detector. Her reaction is priceless and the narrator does a great job of portraying her emotions and character. I had the exact same thing happen to me just days after listening to this scene/

Loved this quirky book!

This book had it all for me: funny, smart, quirky, real, loveable characters; cozy mystery with fresh themes (high school from the teacher's perspective, Shakespeare, circus, buddies instead of hero/sidekick); great writing; impressive narration (loved Ms Hickman's voice of Emma). All in all, I loved it and am really looking forward to the next book!
