Publisher's summary

This series looks sharply at those who perceive themselves as the rich - the elite, and revolves around expensive cars, clothes and posh country clubs. Fans of Sue Grafton, J.A. Jance, and Sara Peretsky will find Shelton's female sleuth captivating. Devout in her dedication for the underdog, Charlie Parker gets drawn into perilous predicaments while sticking her neck out for friends and clients in trouble. She proves a wily opponent for the evil she discovers. Using her trusty jeep for surveillance, she is aided and abetted by Rusty, a huge, lovable mutt.

Needs work

This was an okay read. The characters were likable and the story believable. I was a bit unsatisfied with the ending and a plot twist that was never truly developed. All in all, it was an ok book. The narrator gets one star because of the annoying noises that I heard throughout the book. I'll give the second book a try. Hopefully there will be a new narrator.

Great story, terrible performance

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Loved the story, but the poor performance by the speaker and the poor audio quality made listening very distracting.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Interesting plot line; I liked the twists.

Would you be willing to try another one of Lynda Evans???s performances?

No

Do you think Deadly Gamble needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Yes - with a better audio engineer and better speaker.

Story ok. Narrator horrible

The story was very good. You hear her suck in for breath and swallow all the time. So distracting.

Good cozy mystery

3 stars…average rating. The book is well written and the narration is fine. However, I come to this series after reading/listening to the author’s Sweet’s Sweets series. I cannot help but compare this series to that magical-realism series.

I will continue with Book 2 to see if my interest grows, lessens, or stays the same. This is an acceptable cozy mystery.

Ok

Characters in books make a lot of questionable decisions. Police arresting people with no evidence, Charlie walking into dangerous situations. Story flowed well and mostly kept my attention.

loved it. It was surprising.

I kind of wished there was a little more drama in the story line. I did like the twist though

Amateur<br />Sleuth

Potential but weak whodunnit is set in a nice place but seems impromptu and weak.

poor narration and recording

Prepare to hear pages flip, voice echo and surrounding studio sounds during the reading. This is the first narration I've heard from this studio and I am not impressed. The sounds prevent the listener from losing themselves in the story.
