Publisher's Summary

James Patterson raises the stakes to their highest level, ever - when Alex Cross becomes the obsession of a genius of menace set on proving that he is the greatest mind in the history of crime.

Detective Alex Cross is a family man at heart - nothing matters more to him than his children, his grandmother, and his wife, Bree. His love of his family is his anchor, and gives him the strength to confront evil in his work. One man knows this deeply, and uses Alex's strength as a weapon against him in the most unsettling and unexpected novel of James Patterson's career.

When the ones Cross loves are in danger, he will do anything to protect them. If he does anything to protect them, they will die.

What the Critics Say

“Michael Boatman gives a first-rate narration in this latest installment in the Alex Cross series. A second narrator, Tom Wopat, artfully portrays the homicidal maniac who plans to destroy Alex by destroying his family. Boatman captures the tension in the plot and keeps the listener engaged with the action. His portrayal of a bereaved Alex Cross--voice trembling with despair--will have listeners spellbound. And his total command of the story is like a zip line to Alex's hell. Though the symphony of terror isn't over at the conclusion of the audiobook, fans of Michael Boatman will revel in his delivery of this captivating thriller.” (AudioFile)

"[Patterson's] books don't pussyfoot around when it comes to the villains. These are bad, bad people... [I, Alex Cross] is political, with a lot of intrigue in high places." (Al Roker, The Today Show)

I am someone who enjoys audible books very much now that they exist. As a young student (real young) I can remember a teacher telling me how books can transport people to different places & open up a whole new world. This is how listening to audible books make me feel. Now if I can just stop falling asleep while listening to them at night I would be fine. Ha ha

"Why did i listen to this book?"

For some reason i did not check the reviews of this book this time. And that was stupid! although the intrigue & suspense was there in full, the ending was not. i do not believe Patterson can pull this book from the grave. The damage is done. People can not be yanked up & down back & forth like that & not be affected. Sorry Patterson, this book goes back for a full refund.

    "Need more action; seems lost"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

It was okay but Alex seems to be more interested in political and psychology than solving the mystery.

Would you be willing to try another one of Michael Boatman and Tom Wopat ’s performances?

    Performance was fine.

Was Cross My Heart worth the listening time?

    Yes

    Any additional comments?

Disappointed in the tease for another Cross book and more disappointed when the last 20 minutes or so was an advertisement for another not Cross book.

    "Stupid Ending"

I wish I had read other reviews before buying this book. The ending was as stupid as any I have ever seen in a book. There is NO satisfaction from listening †o this book. I would not recommend it unless you are a serious Alex Cross fan. Even then, wait until the next one comes out so you will have an ending to this one.

    "The Way to the Cross"
    Any additional comments?

So far, this is the most emotionally charged of the Cross Series. Not only do we see Det. Alex Cross as the meticulously organized and systematic Officer but the book depicts his human side as a loving father, husband and just one human being elated to savor the accomplishments of his family but also at a total loss after his a five-fold tragedy befell in his own household. Mr. Patterson is one author who knows how to pierce that pain center in our brain and share the misery of Mr. Cross as he helplessly deal with his tragedy and how he succumbed to a vacuum when he realized that there is nothing else out there to live or die for. But then, there is a Sequel to this book and Mr. Patterson trumps again to keep us hoping that with one stroke of his pen, the plot reverses to a complete 360 degree revolution.

    "Writer Too Grew Bored"

As this story laboriouly progressed, it became increasingly evident that Mr. Patterson himself was also growing bored with the whole process. He began to throw in gratuitous violence and silly dialogue and our "hero" wandering about, expecting us to accept such implausible development, software and motivations that it reminded me of the "jump the shark" phenomenon in terrible films today where the implausible strains at the storylines. I know. I know...this is supposed to be an old classic from decades ago but it was really an old turkey....tough to chew.

    "great book, frustrating ending"

I won't give the ending away but be prepared for many twists and turns! I thought the voices of Marcus Sunday and Acadia were creepy and didn't match their physical descriptions, but otherwise I enjoyed the performances
