Publisher's summary

A former star athlete turned coroner's investigator is drawn into a brutal, complicated murder in this psychological thriller from a father-son writing team that delivers "brilliant, page-turning fiction" (Stephen King).

Natural causes or foul play? That's the question Clay Edison must answer each time he examines a body. Figuring out motives and chasing down suspects aren't part of his beat - not until a seemingly open-and-shut case proves to be more than meets his highly trained eye.

Eccentric, reclusive Walter Rennert lies cold at the bottom of his stairs. At first glance the scene looks straightforward: a once-respected psychology professor done in by booze and a bad heart. But his daughter, Tatiana, insists that her father has been murdered, and she persuades Clay to take a closer look at the grim facts of Rennert's life.

What emerges is a history of scandal and violence and an experiment gone horribly wrong that ended in the brutal murder of a coed. Walter Rennert, it appears, was a broken man - and maybe a marked one. And when Clay learns that a colleague of Rennert's died in a nearly identical manner, he begins to question everything in the official record.

All the while, his relationship with Tatiana is evolving into something forbidden. The closer they grow, the more determined he becomes to catch her father's killer - even if he has to overstep his bounds to do it.

The twisting trail Clay follows will lead him into the darkest corners of the human soul. It's his job to listen to the tales the dead tell. But this time he's part of a story that makes his blood run cold.

Critic reviews

"Dennis Boutsikaris is an excellent narrator for this mystery.... Not only does Boutsikaris use vocal nuance to distinguish the characters, but he also enhances the budding romance between Clay and Tatiana with pauses and inflection." (AudioFile)

This was a let down

What would have made Crime Scene better?

The story line was all over the place. It is hard to follow with many different characters. There were too many details which lead no where. It was hard to understand why the main character was following his actions.

What was most disappointing about Jonathan Kellerman and Jesse Kellerman ’s story?

The lead character was in law enforcement but acted more like a private detective then a sheriff deputy. I kept asking myself why a coroner would be investigating a murder.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

His performance was monotone. There were times when there was no difference in his character voices, I would loose track as to who was talking, and during heavy detailed conversations I found myself not listening.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Crime Scene?

I had no idea what one murder had to do with another. The original scene made no sense why Edison would investigate a 24 year old crime.

Any additional comments?

What a total let down on a Kellerman novel. I liked the fact that he included Alex Delaware in this novel but the whole story line made no sense and I found myself wanting to quit listening. There were some good parts but overall I was not impressed.

Pretty sedate.

The narrator has a quality to his voice that I can't describe, kind of California valley boy thing that I'm not used to hearing. He did a great job reading the book I just didn't think he was the right match for this character. I kept saying to him "sit up straight and quit being so flippant!', Really though, I would listen to him read something else.

It was pretty tame as far as action or real suspense goes, unless I missed it in the last three chapters. I just ended up skipping through those. I was pretty disappointed I guess. I thought The Genius was so good. I guess I'll try The Executor next.

Maybe they wrote this one together when Jesse was just getting started I don't know. Keep them coming though! We'll read them!

Awesome!

What made the experience of listening to Crime Scene the most enjoyable?

I have either read or listened to each and every novel in the Alex Delaware series... Love them... Now, I'm excited to look forward to this new Edison series. Good character interaction, good storyline, fluid, ... fast read... went through it in one day.. :-).

Loved loved loved it!!

This book was entertaining, suspenseful, funny and held my interest the entire time. I hated for it to end. My first Kellerman that wasn't about Alex Delaware and it was delightful! And, or course, Dennis Boutsikaris could make an instruction manual sound engaging! Must listen!

Nicely done! buy didn't enjoy the ending.

The main character (Klay Edison) really grew on me, perhaps in the sequel he's a detective, I didn't particularly like the ending but overall good listen.

Wait. What? It's finished?

I enjoyed the performance, writing and storytelling yet often wondered "where is this going?"

Apparently so did the Kellermans because when the book ended I quickly checked to make sure I hadn't inadvertently skipped chapters. Overall it's a good listen but with a puzzling abrupt conclusion.

Good story well told. Strong writing team.

Jesse + John > John. Characters more fully drawn. The narrator is one of my favorite performers & does a great job. I would appreciate him learning correct pronunciation of “Nevada” & “Boalt” Hall as these are well known & mispronunciation takes one out of the story. Worried a road trip would go through Suisun lol.

Not good

Kellerman is one of my favorite authors. This book was quite a disappointment. The story line was so truncated that I found myself going back several times to try and follow it. I finally gave up about half way thru.

New Keller man choice

I read this because Jonathan Kellerman was listed as a co-author. I don't know if Jesse Kellerman is a first time author or not but if so, his parents have raised a writer able to fill their shoes.
