Publisher's summary

Bubba Snoddy's got some problems. His family has descended for the Christmas holidays and not in a good way. His cousin wants to own the Snoddy Mansion, decrepit, falling down columns, termites, wood rot and all and isn't above using manipulative behavior to achieve his ends. Miz Demetrice is up to nefarious and illegal activities while trying to entertain relatives. His cousin's 10-year-old son is the personification of a demon and has hobbies of looking at medical photographs, making stun guns from scratch, and causing havoc wherever he roams.

The woman of Bubba's dreams, Deputy Willodean Gray, is still evading his romantic pursuits. Patients from the local mental institute are wandering over the town, ostensibly assisting with the Christmas Festival thanks to a program established by the mayor to cut costs. And Bubba has just found the dead body of a man dressed as Santa in the Christmas scene at City Hall.

Oh, Pegramville, Texas is just the best place to be at Christmas if a fella has a bullet proof vest and a linebacker's helmet. All the folks think Bubba might have done did it again, even though it was proven that he didn't done did it the first time, and Bubba has to move quickly in order to catch a murderer.

Better than the first

I liked the second book in the Bubba Snoddy series much better than the first. I think the reason for this was twofold. First is this book has much more going on, the bodies keep and the intrigue keeps building. The second is that I listened to this as an audio book which I find much better when authors tries to write as people talk (think “what cha doin’ boy”). Hearing the characters in this manner is much better than trying to read it, in my opinion. Like the first book I wish there were more vivid details and descriptions to make the reader feel as if they were there but overall the home spun tale got me in the holiday spirit.

The narrator did a good job with the southern sounds and making Bubba really feel like a good old boy.

I think I liked this book more than the first.

I think I liked this book more than the first, but it had many of the same issues I had with the first (i.e. the "hick speak.") I will warn you that this book spoils the first book in the first chapter. Normally, I find mysteries are pretty good about alluding to, but not specifically describing, the previous stories. This one literally calls it out, tells you the plot and the murderer right off the bat.

I must really like Michael Gilboe. This has to be the fifth or sixth book of his I've listened to. I'm not especially fond of the stereotypical accents, but I think the book called for it.

A great second southern treat!

Although this is book 2 I still can't get over his much I love the name Bubba Snoddy. And the best part is that this book also has some new relatives with amazing names like 'Fudge' and 'Brownie.'

I love how this was a variation on the 12 days of Christmas song, except it's more like the 12 deaths of Christmas... Reminiscent of '10 little soldiers' from the Agatha Christie book "And Then There Were None." Bubba & Mrs. Demetrius have to race to find the killer before each of the other murders take place (as its foreshadowed that there will be 1 for each of the 12 days). There is a sense of urgency to not only find the killer & save the potential victims but also to clear Bubba's name, who yet again became a suspect.

I love the dynamic between Bubba & his mother; they are polar opposites & it makes for some very entertaining banter. Ms. Demetrius is my favorite character, so I love that she was front & center in this story. Overall I really enjoyed this listen & recommend it, even if it's not during Christmas-time. It was even better than book 1 & I look forward to the next book & seeing where things go with Bubba & Willa Dean. I was gifted this book for an honest review.

hilarious southern mystery

This book is the 2nd one in the series the 1st was Bubba and the Dead Woman. I highly recommend this series if you need a break from the more serious mysteries. It has a lot of crazy fun characters which the narrator does a great job with. Bubba the “Hick” sheriff is always in trouble; him and the other characters make you laugh out loud but definitely has good mystery that keeps you guessing. It is a hilarious southern mystery . An acquired taste but worth it

Any additional comments?

When I downloaded this listen, I was pretty sure with a main character named Bubba that it would be a particular type of listen. It was but it did not disappoint. The narrator was a perfect compliment to the subject and the listen, though a murder mystery, was fun and hectic and full of colorful characters.

It ended on a new mystery and so now I wait patiently for that installment. I mean, it's Bubba; what could possibly go wrong?

Funny and sarcastic go well together

I was provided this book for free from the author/narrator for an honest and unbiased review of the book.

First I have to say that I LOVE Mr. Gilboe's narration. He can read almost anything and make it great. He usually picks great books to narrate and he did with this one.
This was a fast paced, fun and funny book. I'm going to go back and read the first in the series now to catch up.
This book is completely worth the credit.

Happy Reading/Listening
