Publisher's summary

Ryder Creed and his dogs have been making national headlines. They've intercepted several major drug stashes being smuggled through Atlanta's airport. But their newfound celebrity has also garnered some unwanted attention. When Creed and one of his dogs are called in to search a commercial fishing vessel, they discover a secret compartment. But the Colombian cartel's latest shipment isn't drugs. This time, its cargo is human. To make matters worse, Creed helps one of the cartel's drug mules escape - a 14-year-old girl who reminds him of his younger sister who disappeared 15 years ago. Meanwhile, FBI agent Maggie O'Dell is investigating a series of murders - the victims tortured, killed, and dumped in the Potomac River. She suspects it's the work of a cunning and brutal assassin, but her politically motivated boss has been putting up roadblocks. By the time she uncovers a hit list with Creed's name on it, it might be too late. The cartel has already sent someone to destroy Creed and everyone close to him. But Creed and his dogs have a few surprises in store on their compound in Florida. Will it be enough to stop a ruthless cartel determined to remove the thorn in its side once and for all?

Maggie O’Dell introduces Ryder Creed

Catches you from the start. New character introduced by our friend, Maggie O’Dell. And the inclusion of so many wonderfully personable dogs, a pleasure to read/listen to.
Can’t wait to hear “Scout” grow up!

Another winning series

Alex Kava has written another great mystery/thriller. I do believe this book could be just the beginning of a new series. Ryder Creed is a character quite different from Kava's Maggie O'Dell. I do love the idea of having a new series involving dogs as the main character, not just in the background. Graham Winston did a wonderful job narrating. Ms Kava keep writing your interesting stories and I will keep on listening. I recommend this book to those who are interested in mysteries/thrillers, especially dog lovers.

Engrossing! Start to finish

With about 1600 audiobooks in my collection, it has become very difficult to find something new AND good. This book (and hopefully the following in the series) is that: New & Good. In fact I liked it so much that I started over as soon as I finished.
As for 'new' ... new to me, as it was published in 2015. The hero has 4 legs. The story is quite original. It moves quickly. The characters are 'real', believable. You will learn things you didn't know you'd be interested in learning!

Graham Winton ~ This is my first experience with him as narrator. He is easy to listen to, has a nice voice and reads at a great pace.

Very enjoyable! Love dogs and veterans!

I’m so glad I found this series of books. Likes the surprise ending where I actually did not figure out the bad guy before the big reveal. That doesn’t usually happen. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

Good and bad book and listen..

OMG! Did we have to go through the revolting, disgusting, gross, description of the floater that was found in the river? I just kept swiping the pages of my iPad to get away from it and the description kept showing up. If you have a weak stomach you won’t like that part. You might want to skip the first few pages of chapter 11.

As interesting as this story was I don’t think I could read anything else by this author. Spiders, scorpions, poisonous snakes, fire ants and cockroaches. Now, I like stories about killers but I draw the line at one disgusting bug, arachnid, or whatever, after another. Stab him, shoot him, strangle him, whatever, but bugs and other creepy things crawling all over just gives me the creeps. Jeez, Maggie had 12 scorpion stings all over her. Yuck! One corpse had been laid out on a mountain of fire ants. One corpse had a mouthful of cockroaches. Good grief! I was having a hard time finishing this book.

Then came the end, when all those bad guys came after Ryder. That part was soooo good. When he put all his dogs to work. And only 1 shot was fired. It was really good. But not good enough to get over all those bugs and things. From about 80% on it was a really good book.

There was no romance in this book and only a little bit of swearing.

As to the narrator: He was perfect with the voices, both the males and the females but there were no emotions at all. However, I would still listen to Graham Winton again because each and every voice was different, and that takes talent.

Great story!

I have not read a book in a while with a male MC. I typically read strong female MCs. The excitement and twists left me invested in the book and I binged it. I’m now going for the next book! ALL of the side characters male and female, human and dog are very well written and I’m glad there a a bunch in this series!
