Publisher's summary

Lieutenant Joe Gunther is in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom investigating a minor embezzling case. It's a pleasant distraction and a chance to reconnect with old friends, but when a house fire reveals itself to be arson, compounded by murder, Gunther can't help but investigate. He quickly finds himself enmeshed in a web of animosity between put-upon townspeople, the state police, angry parents, and members of a reclusive sect. Murder follows murder, yet no one seems to be telling Gunther the whole truth - not even his childhood friends. And truth is what he desperately needs if he's to stop the killings.

Exceptional

Again, audible has made it possible to read new authors and I’m grateful to have found an awesome series. Both the authors’ story and the narrator takes one out of their reality into a story of mystery.
Thank you.

Meh

Kind of an odd experience. I love the narration. I love the world building. I love the storytelling ... mostly.

Everything feels good about the story until you hit about 75%. And then the resolution comes a bit haphazardly. Very quickly with a lackluster aha moment. I'm also not sold on Joe. He's a good lead but also doesn't really seem to be putting in the effort. And in this one, he talked to much. As seasoned as he is, and feels, it's at odds with the character he's supposed to be.

I'm sticking with it for a bit though. They've got a nice rhythm.

so glad I found Joe

just started reading Archer Mayor's Joe Gunther series and I'm loving them. although I wouldn't want to live in his town (too many murders), the locale and people remind me of home (Michigan's Upper Peninsula). I like Joe's human frailties, his supporting cast - especially Kunkle - and the small town feel with their dark underbellies. great reading or listening.

Needs Editing

Interesting plot but way too much narration. The author loves to write and write and write. The story takes way too long to unfold. By the time I finally got near the end, I was losing interest.

Love this series & performance!!

I just found these books probably 2 weeks ago. I'm moving on to book 4. I'm hooked. I haven't even used my credit yet because this series has kept me thoroughly entertained. The performance is fantastic and the stories are a mix of mystery, thriller, with some humor and great detective work. I saw a few bad reviews before deciding to give them a try and obviously this just isn't the genre for those people. This is everything I look for in murder mystery books with awesome narration, and did I mention that almost all of these books are included with Prime membership?! There are a ton of books in this series!

1990 copyright

If you like riding a bicycle with flat tires, then this is the book for you. It creeps along sedately as the cast members are introduced and suspicious deaths are shuffled into the mix... then the down hill pace quickens as a gory murder scene amps up the action. The nonstop police work carries us along to unravel a fine plot.

Borderlines

This is the second book in this series. In this book Joe is searching for a killer that started a fire. He is away from home at a place he knew from when he was younger. There is a good story line and it's easy to follow. Joe kinda does things his way. He doesn't care what people thinks. He has a way of finding things out. If you like this type of books I think you'll like this. Tom Taylorson does a good job narrating this book. Tom has the perfect voice for mystery books He does good with the different people. Nope

Too slow, too much description. I felt like I was in his head the entire time.

OUTSTANDING

This second book is at least as good if not better than the first; rare in the world of literature. As I recommended the first book to all, I again recommend this to everyone. The stupid comments about foul language are just that... stupid.

Don’t miss this one!
