Publisher's summary

Birdman showcases Hayder at her spine-tingling best as beloved series character Jack Caffery tracks down a terrifying serial killer. In his first case as lead investigator with London's crack murder squad, Detective Jack Caffery is called on to investigate the murder of a young woman whose body has been discovered near the Millennium Dome in Greenwich, southeast London. Brutalized, and mutilated beyond recognition, the victim is soon joined by four others discovered in the same area - all female and all ritualistically murdered. And when the postmortem examination reveals a gruesome signature connecting the victims, Caffery realizes exactly what he's dealing with - a dangerous serial killer.

Graphic, that seemed a little gratuitous.

The story was great... that said I felt it was too bogged down by the detailed barbarities. I don't expect an author to sugar coat things. I fully understand the need to convey concepts that are unimaginable, even disturbing. However, scenes of violence and inhumanity, much like scenes of sex can easily cross over from being descriptive to unnecessarily explicit, vulgar.

I did enjoy the story, it was not predictable or implausable. Although another reviewer remarked on the cliche of prostitutes and drug addicts, this is an unfortunate statistical fact. It was a good listen overall, but buyer beware.

Okay, so Damien Goodwin's sometime's hard to understand

Black is a color, darkness is color's absence. Hayder comes very close to black. Certainly she goes places where the the fog makes you really uncomfortable even in mid day. Unfortunately Damien Goodwin isn't alway's the best guide through the murk since his various voices are often too British authentic for my American ears. Sometimes I wished that this Audio Book had subtitles.

Regardless, the book's bumps of dark patches and Goodwin's garbles don't overcome the way Hayder writes. If your ears can navigate Goodwin's regionalisms... and a trip through some very dark scenes... Well, enjoy.

A darn good read!

This is the first audio book that I have enjoyed completely. A huge reason in my positive appraisal of this book, is due to the narrator. Super job! Do note that this story is Not for the squeemish! The actions of the killer are detailed and graphic.

Creepy, but good

This is a very gross story, but it is very well done and you definitely get caught up in Jack Caffrey, the main police character. For whatever reason, I tend to like this stuff, but I definitely would not recommend it for the faint of heart.

Gory

This story is too realistic and gory for me. The writing is good the reader is too good. I just do not have an appetite for too much reality and cruelty.6

Sickening

I don’t particularly care for murder mysteries, some are good sure – but overall it’s not my genre. Knowing me, I must have downloaded this book because it takes place in London and I love that city. I expressly don’t care for abhorrent depravity and this novel was filled to the brim with it! Ugh! What was I thinking? It was so revolting and hard to stomach.

So why did I read on? Simple: I wanted to know how it ended.

I just feel traumatized now, it was not worth it! I need to read something nice and fluffy now to “clean” my brain after that sickening repulsive experience.

Edge of seat thrilller.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, but I would be very selective about who I recommended this to. This was my first Hayder and I was frankly surprised that Mo Hayder is a woman. Her books are very violent with a large helping of gratuitous sex thrown in. Some of her situations are downright cringe worthy.

What did you like best about this story?

I couldn't stop listening. I had to get to the end. Every time you think you have it figured out, something else gets thrown in.

Have you listened to any of Damien Goodwin’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, but he's spectacular. I was really annoyed that I got to Hayder #3 and she switched narrators on me. He's just so good.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I just love a damaged leading man! And Jack Caffery is the perfect protagonist in that regard. He's f'd up, for sure. :)

Any additional comments?

Not for the faint of heart.

Chilling!

Read this in print when it came out years ago. Just as good in audio form. Now, if MO would just publish more!
