Publisher's Summary

From top-10 Irish best-selling author Jo Spain comes the second novel in the Inspector Tom Reynolds series.

Ryan Finnegan, a high-ranking government official, is brutally slain in Leinster House, the seat of the Irish parliament. Detective Inspector Tom Reynolds and his team are called in to uncover the truth behind the murder. As the suspects start to rack up, Tom must untangle a web of corruption, sordid secrets and sinister lies.

At first all the evidence hints at a politically motivated crime - until a surprise discovery takes the investigation in a dramatically different direction. Suddenly the motive for murder has got a lot more personal...but who benefits the most from Ryan's death?

A good plot ruined by stilted wooden narration

The narration was irritating, stopping dead in the midst of phrases. Voices of characters inconsistent.

Absolutely dreadful narration

This is my second Jo Spain book, the first was great. This was also a good story completely ruined by the awful narration. He would. Stop in the middle of. Sentences. Use a high pitched effeminate tone for a character with a deep voice... and said 'haitch' for 'aitch'. Argh!!! I haven't checked yet, but sincerely hope he isn't narrating any others in this series. Awful.

Narrator voice too annoying

I just listened to my first Jo Spain book which I loved. Brilliant female narrator. I think she added to the book. But I actually couldn’t listen to this book, I was getting so annoyed. It was like the narrator was trying to articulate every word & that was the focus, as opposed to telling the story. He was good at accents on a more positive note. It might just be lack of experience. It simply wasn’t for me. I don’t know if the story is good or not, but as I loved With our Blessing, I know this Jo Spain can write.

Very poorly narrated

A good story. A bit too political for me. The reading was very poor. Inflections often not correct. Spoiled the book.

Awful reading

What did you like best about Beneath the Surface? What did you like least?

interestimg character interaction, and convincing political background. But the reader ... Flat intonation, sentences badly infected. Obvious hesitations before polysyllabic words. And my top three misreadings : a vet treating a "calf in cow". A Roman 'AmPI theatre' and people 'incarcerating' autumn leaves. I kid you not. This is just not good enough for a professional reading.

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Brian Tynan?

Anyone. Shameful that such unprepared work could get to publication.

Any additional comments?

Make sure the readers have done the preparation! A real disservice to Jo Spain's novel.

A Gripping Tale

My first, but not the last Jo Spain. A compelling tale of political intrigue and murder very well read by Brian Tynan. Can't wait to download the next one!
