Adele

Beautiful, elegant and sweet - Louise's new friend seems perfect in every way. As she becomes obsessed by this flawless couple, entangled in the intricate web of their marriage, they each in turn reach out to her.

But only when she gets to know them both does she begin to see the cracks.... Is David really the man she thought she knew, and is Adele as vulnerable as she appears?

Just what terrible secrets are they both hiding, and how far will they go to keep them?

Critic Reviews

"Sarah Pinborough is a literary chameleon of astonishing power and grace." (Neil Gaiman)

"Just when you think you've nailed it, Pinborough pulls the rug out from underneath you." (Sam Baker)
"Lean and mean, dark and disturbing, this is the kind of novel that takes over your life. Sarah Pinborough slays." (Joe Hill)
"Masterful writing that crackles with tension, before detonating that ending." (Angela Clarke)
"If Behind Her Eyes isn't the thriller of the year, there is no justice. Hugely entertaining, utterly compelling and the ending will leave you reeling. (Sarah Lotz)
"Twisty and twisted. Jealousy, lies, betrayal, guilt, toxic spouses, madness. They're all in here." (Adam Nevill)

That was a waste of points....

I cannot get past Chapter 10 and am now deleting this totally boring book from my device. I cannot figure out that there is a story here and am falling asleep listening to it. Sorry!

Good until it gets too far fetched.

Really enjoyed the book at first and the mystery but then it goes off down a far fetched and a little bit ridiculous route and it loses all credibility for me. Shame it didn't keep to a more real concept.

Utter Tosh

Would you try another book written by Sarah Pinborough or narrated by the narrators?

The principal narrators by and large made a decent fist of some very poor material although it is a little misleading to list the great Anna Bentinck as one of them when all she does is introduce the chapter headings. As for the author, never again.

What could Sarah Pinborough have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

The publicity materials for this book make great play of its "twist" ending. What they omit to mention is that up until that point the plot treads a very well worn path with no particular charm, wit or narrative verve. As the end neared I anticipated the ending but kept thinking "No, she wouldn't go there, would she?" and lo and behold she did. Never mind giving me my money back I'm much more annoyed by the time I wasted on this when I could have been listening to something half way decent.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

The narrators did their best to bring the two dimensional characters to life although the application of Scottish accents was inconsistent. There were at least two other characters described as growing up in Scotland and yet who were portrayed with English accents.

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

None.

Any additional comments?

Note to self - remember that new books marketed with puffs from other writers (rather than from critics) are generally dire.

Terrible!

I should have listened to Jenni's review. This book is painful to listen to and is quite repetitive. A complete waste of my time, I only listened to the end a) because I was promised 'A brilliant ending' which may have made up for the main story and b) because I had wasted my credit purchasing it. Don't waste your credits or more importantly your time!

Totally engrossing literally couldn't put this down all day.

I pre ordered this and it was waiting for me on my Kindle this morning. I finished it half an hour ago.. I've had it on all day. Well presented. The narrators do a marvellous job and the novel itself is truly gripping. I wasn't sure what to expect and at first thought it was going to be a gritty thriller but the fantasy/horror elements trickled in so subtly I was completely convinced by them and gripped by the characters and the story to the final jaw dropping conclusion. Well worth the purchase price.

Gripping and unexpected

I LOVED this. Twisty, turny, creepy as anything. The audio equivalent of a page turner.

I won't comment on any of the plot as coming to it unspoiled is best.

Loses one star for performance which is generally excellent but there's one character who should have had a Scottish accent from the start.

Not what I was expecting

If you're buying this expecting a standard crime thriller then you may be disappointed. It's hard to give a full review without revealing some of the plot, however there is a supernatural element to the book that I didn't expect from the summary. As a rule I dislike books with a supernatural theme so I was annoyed that this was not made clear. Also, I'd figured out the so-called twist at the end before I got halfway through so it didn't come as much of a surprise. All in all an average read, it certainly didn't live up to some of the rave reviews I've read. Having said all of that it was well narrated, probably slightly better than the book deserves.

Silly

Even the twist not enough to redeem this silly plot. Ridiculous characters. Morosely entertaining and engaging though at times.

I want the last 13 hours of my life back.

Well written and great narrator, but this will be the last fictional love story I read for a long time. Wasn't entirely pleased with how it ended. Felt unlrealistic and didn't do the book justice.

What an ending

The story revolves around three main characters David, Adele and Louise and most of the book is switching between the perspectives of Adele and Louise as their friendship develops.

This book is a thriller and I was desperate to know what was going to happen from the moment I started listening. I could never have imagined the ending and I was pretty blown away when it all came out.

I would highly recommend this book and only sad I got through it so fast.

Tedious.....

Found this great to start, I couldn’t put it down, then I became sick of listening to the repetitive drivel of Louise and Adele it became almost painful to my ears so I returned this over half way through as I couldn’t bare anymore! Why does the author have to make pages and pages of the same thoughts and feelings over and over?? I became to hate the characters as a lot of people also commented. I didn’t get to the ending as I just couldn’t care less what happened.
It will do your head in this book. Not for me at all.

This book did my head.

I've recommended this book to several people, moreso to discuss what makes a good book. For me it was a real pageturner but is it a good book, thats for you and your book club to decide.
