Publisher's summary

In death, they are purified. Holding his victims under water, he washes away their sins as they struggle for their last breath. Then he stakes their bodies to the ground, exposing them for what they really are: witches, sent to tempt and to corrupt.

No one knows about defence attorney Charlotte Wellington's murdered sister, or about her childhood spent with the carnival that's just arrived in town. For Charlotte, what's past is past. But others don't agree. And as a madman's body count rises, she and Detective Daniel Rokov are drawn into a mission that's become terrifyingly personal.

Very enjoyable

It was a good story. A little obvious but nonetheless enjoyable. Perfect to listen to with a glass of wine.

LOVED IT!

This is an excellent story that keeps you guessing for most of the book. When you find out the whole twisted truth it is quite surprising.

Struck Again!

Mary Burton you struck again...In a good way. I enjoyed this book and would recommend it. It was also nice to listen to Johanna Parker as the narration again for her books. Thanks for another great mystery!

Great storyline...but the narrator...

I love trilogies, so when I found out this book was book two of three I purchased immediately. I loved the storyline, but I did not like the narrator. She made the characters sound elderly. I could not get into the romantic aspect of the book because I kept visualizing my grandparents having sex! Ugh! On to book three.

Fantastic Book! Couldn't stop listening!

I really enjoyed this book. It was a different kind of storyline and good character back-story without spending too much time on flashbacks. The narration was excellent as well. All around a great book!

Slow going but worth it.

Almost bailed a few times in the beginning but glad I stuck with it till the end. Not a bad story, overall fairly entertaining. Also, free.

Great story line keeps you guessing

This was a great story, it was neat to hear because I am from Northern Virginia as well. The ending is phenomenal! I really did not see that coming. Also the woman reading the book did amazing on the voices.

Another great book by Mary Burton

I really liked this book. It was interesting, intriguing, and had enough twists and turns to make it a nice ride. I really, really, really liked Daniel. He was hands down my favorite character. His partner (Sinclair) was annoying. Is it my favorite by this author? No. But it was good. This book is definitely worth listening to.
