Publisher's Summary

Most careers begin with an interview and a handshake. Others require a little something more.

Meet Jake Oliver. The day will come when he's one of the best cleaners in the business, a man skilled at making bodies disappear. At the moment, however, he's a 22-year-old rookie cop, unaware his life is about to change. In a burning barn a body is found - and the fire isn't the cause of death. The detectives working the case have a pretty good idea about what went down. But Officer Oliver thinks it's something else entirely, and pursues a truth others would prefer remain hidden - others who will go to extreme lengths to keep him quiet.

Every identity has an origin. This is Quinn's.

    "Excellent Origin Story"

I love back stories. How do your heroes become that way? What pressures pushed them into the lives they lead? Battles does an excellent job of creating those pressures that pushed a young man out of his chosen carrer of a policeman into that of being a cleaner.Well done, Mr Battles!

    "Becoming Quinn says it all!"

This prequel is well done. It is not too long, but does fill in one big missing piece of Quinn's life: what did he do before he was a cleaner?

If you have been reading the series you know his real name is not Jonathan Quinn, he has a biological family, and he was trained to be a cleaner. What he did before, how he was recruited, and why he picked the name all stem from one incident. Battles, as usual, weaves this into an entertaining tale about murders and "Quinn's" curiosity. It is a satisfying read with just the right amount of information. It does not overload us with history, but tells of the event that created the cleaner we know.

Scott Brick is becoming the voice of Jonathan Quinn. Please keep it up!

    "What a great Segway!"

This is a good introduction to Quinn. It explains how a non military and somewhat intense, character developed. Brett does so masterfully. He is able to wind good and bad intentions, around crazy and yet plausible action , and still make it fun to read. Well done!

    "Story was a decent prequal"

Scot Brick is by far my favorite voice performer for audio books. I felt like he did an excellent job on this book, though based on the story, it seemed there were times when he struggled a little for finding the correct voice for it.

I'm enjoying Brett's writing style, though there are times when he switches "perspectives" that can make the story feel repetitive.
Otherwise the story was engaging, and you are able to appeciate and root for the protagonist of the story.

"The beginning of a new series?"

I usually get anything new that is narrated by Scott Brick, especially in the mystery genre. This book is one that didn't disappoint and I am looking forward to another collaboration of Battles and Brick.

    "Always listening"

This was tough to get into, but I did want to know the back story. I struggled listening to the first half. Stopping on and off. The story picked up then and is was worth finishing. Hope the others in the series are better.

"SO glad I got this book!"

Audible was doing a "Scott Brick"
(Narrator) sale and this book caught my eye . Since I've not listened to anything Mr. Brick has narrated that I haven't liked I figured I'd give this book a go. Sooo glad I bought it!
Turns out, Brett Battles, of whom this is my first read/listen is a REALLY good writer. I was immediately intrigued by the story line and was not disappointed . A real page turner
about a young intelligent cop who is given a very strange and unique opportunity . This book goes from pianissimo to fórte on the dark meter and I am getting the next in the series the second I finish this review!
