Legal thriller written 34 years ago

The man who wrote using the pen name Ed McBain and several other pseudonyms wrote many, many novels between 1952 and his death in 2005. Beginning several years ago Brilliance Audio, owned by Amazon, began publishing audio versions of the 87th Precinct series narrated by Dick Hill and the Matthew Hope series narrated by Luke Daniels. More than 50 of these audio books performed by top flight narrators are now available at Audible. These books are less expensive using Whispersync for Voice and very inexpensive with Kindle Unlimited. This is the first Ed McBain audio book I have listened to, but I have read many in the past.

Beauty and the Beast was first released in 1982. The racial language is a bit raw. It is set in southern Florida. The protagonist Matthew Hope is a civil/torts attorney who is persuaded to take on a murder case with racial overtones.
