great book, lousy reader

Would you consider the audio edition of Aunt Dimity's Death to be better than the print version?

You're kidding, right? Reader Teri Clark Linden is nearly the worst reader ever! I finished reading the book in paperback.

What did you like best about this story?

I read this book years ago and loved it, and I wanted to experience it all over again. Even so, I had completely forgotten how charming this modern-day fairy tale was!

Downtrodden librarian Lori Shepherd is startled to discover that Aunt Dimity, who she'd always thought was an imaginary heroine in her mother's stories, actually lived -- or had lived until very recently. Lori is called upon by the terms of Dimity Westwood's will to accomplish a task. But, Lori discovers, the real task she needs to fulfill so that the dead can rest in peace is a very different one altogether. Along the way, Lori, with the help of a good-hearted and winsome young lawyer, solves more than one mystery.

Would you be willing to try another one of Teri Clark Linden’s performances?

Actually, I refuse to listen to any more Aunt Dimity books simply because she's the reader. I love Audible books, and I may break down later if I get so busy that I can't read paperback books at all.

I almost never check to see who the reader is because, usually, the reader can't ruin the experience for me. In future, I'll be careful not to buy any books that are read by her.

Save yourselves!

Years ago, I read as many of these cute cozy mysteries as I could find. Imagine my delight when I found that they were here on audible.

I have listened to the first 20 minutes of this book and can go no further. I won't go into greater detail, but will say that a reader can make or break a book or a series.

This is a real shame.

So disappointed

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

No, I would not.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Laurie

How could the performance have been better?

They need to find someone who can act to read these books. I own all of the books and love every single one of them, but this narrator is awful!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

If it had been read by someone with feeling.

Any additional comments?

Get a new narrator Nancy!

A terrific book/series *ruined* by narration

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

No question: would be 5 stars with a better narrator

What didn’t you like about Teri Clark Linden’s performance?

I do not appreciated being treated as if I am sitting in a circle in day care - long pauses, sing/song too sweet voice. These charming witty books deserve a narrator who understands and appreciates them!!

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

EXTREME disappointment and sadness bordering on anger based on my reaction to the narrator and my love for the books when I read them in print. I was so excited after seeing the series in 'coming soon' and was prepared to purchase the entire series on Audible and have *many* hours of enjoyment. My only good reaction is that I purchased only the first book in 'coming soon'

Nice "Cozy". Reader just short of terrible.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Only if they like cozies and can find another reader.

What didn’t you like about Teri Clark Linden’s performance?

I've been listening to audio books for several years now and I fancy myself a bit of a sophisticated listener. This reader is just flat, flat, flat.

Good story told badly

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I enjoyed the story and it did keep my attention in spite of the narration

Who was your favorite character and why?

Bill, you just never know what to expect from him.

Would you be willing to try another one of Teri Clark Linden’s performances?

Yes

Was Aunt Dimity's Death worth the listening time?

For me yes, but then i listen while doing other things.

Any additional comments?

I hope the narrator never travels to Scotland as she would be arrested for murder of the Scottish accent, and the English accent wasn't much better. If you can't do and accent properly please don't attempt it. Overall the narration was some of the worst I have ever heard and only the story kept me listening.

Excrutiating Narration

Any additional comments?

I like this book. It's a cozy mystery which pulls you along with its momentum and description, and the mystery of it is also enticing. I want to buy the rest of the series. I will not be buying the audio version from audible though, and I urge you not to buy it either. I really cannot believe that this same narrator was hired to do every single book in the series after this terrible performance. Raising the playback speed really only helps alleviate the awfulness of this lady's narration a little, tiny bit. That only takes care of her unnatural slowness. At first, it was irksome, but I actually wanted to punch her in the face after the millionth time she annunciated a word so carefully that even words like "And" ended up with extra syllables on the end. She sounds like a robot which was built only to read illustrated books to five year olds, though I think even a child that age would find her reading style condescending and utterly wooden. Thanks for sucking every bit of personality out of this text, lady. Great job.

Terrible Narration!

What would have made Aunt Dimity's Death better?

Better narration!

What did you like best about this story?

Haven't finished it yet.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Teri Clark Linden?

Anybody!!!!!

Any additional comments?

Is this narrator a real person? Or did they get some Siri-type computerized voice to read this thing? Seriously, I have only listed to 5 minutes of the story and I'm not sure I'm going to be able to make it through the whole thing. It's awful! I will try increasing the speed and see if that improves it, but if it doesn't I'm going to seriously regret downloading this one.

Wrecked by the reader

Would you try another book from Nancy Atherton and/or Teri Clark Linden?

Atherton yes, IF and only if not narrated by Linden.

What other book might you compare Aunt Dimity's Death to and why?

any cozy

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Teri Clark Linden?

Literally anyone. Part of narration is knowing how to pronounce words properly and understanding where and how to place emphasis. This narrator does not even understand the basic difference between when one says the word "a" as a long a or a short a.

I'm not quite clear whether she actually understands English because the emphasis is completely wrong in virtually every sentence. Bill sounds as though he has some sort of affliction. awful, horrible terrible.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

The story is a nice little cozy. Comfort reading. Destroyed entirely by the narration in this case.

Any additional comments?

There are a lot of parents out there with 3rd graders who could use the extra cash - please hire one of their kids to read the next one, It will be a step up.

Narration "fixed"

What did you love best about Aunt Dimity's Death?
The story is delightfully different and fun.

What about Teri Clark Linden’s performance did you like?
I too found she was speaking very slowly and I was annoyed as I so wanted to like this story. So, I experimented and changed the narration speed to 1.25X. Voila! That was it,
I now know the secret and am happily await more in this series, by this same narrator.
