Publisher's Summary

When Aidan Lloyd's bleak funeral is followed by a nocturnal ritual in the fog, it becomes all too clear that Aidan, son of a wealthy farmer, will not be resting in peace. Aidan's hidden history has reignited an old feud, and a rural tradition begins to display its sinister side.

It's already a fraught time for Merrily Watkins, her future threatened by a bishop committed to restricting her role as diocesan exorcist for Hereford. Suddenly there are events she can't talk about as she and her daughter, Jane, find themselves potentially on the wrong side of the law.

In the city of Hereford, DI Frannie Bliss, investigating a shooting, must confront the apparent growth of organised crime, also contaminating the countryside. On the Welsh border, the old ways are at war with the modern world. As the days shorten and the fog gives way to ice and snow, a savage killing draws Merrily Watkins into a conflict centred on one of Britain's most famous medieval churches, its walls laden with ancient symbolism.

"Might be the best Merrily book yet."

I've been a huge fan of this series for some time, and though I wasn't thrilled with the last book--its a bit of a "transition" novel, necessary in order for the characters to have room to grow, but a bit dark because of this--this one reminds me why I loved the series so much in the first place. And though it ends with all our characters still in transition---Frannie Bliss and Annie Howe in the most shocking way possible--the story is fantastic and we can see a light at the end of the tunnel for all of them. Or at least those who survived the winter's night.

    "Confusing"
Would you try another book from Phil Rickman and/or Emma Powell?

Wearisome overuse of delayed explanation of events. Big stuff happens but not described as it happens, flash forward and then characters explain how it looked and felt to them. Confusing and frustrating.

What could Phil Rickman have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

    See above.

    "The best Merrily Watkins mystery?"

I have listened to all of Phil Rickman's Merrily books. They are all really excellent. This one is definitely one of the best - if not the best. At least one big surprise relating to recurring characters in the series. Very highly recommended but it may help to have listened to OR read books 1 to 13 first!

Emma Powells narration is perfect. Very highly recommended.

    "Merrily does it again!!!"

All the old favourites including Bliss, Annie, Gomer, Jane, Lol & Eirann but Phil has done a bit of a "Game of Thrones" with this one.. Who's left standing?

"good read but a bit confusing"

As with all Phil Rickman books there is a lot of mystery and tradition in the story.

The story is very good if not a bit confusing in places particularly at the end, had to listen to it twice.

A good read while worth listening to.

    "Exce!!ent story"

I really enjoyed this audio book. I had already read the book, but I had wanted to re-read it, so I thought I would try the audio version. I'm glad I did, as I had missed some things in the first reading. I was enthralled by the Kilpeck part of the story, as I have always wanted to go there. This book really held my attention. The characters are much loved, and it feels like you know them. I am very much looking forward to the next book.

    "Kept on falling asleep"
What would have made All of a Winter's Night better?

More focus in the story and less tittle-tattle. I've listened to all Rickman's books and like his stories very much, but in my very private and relative opinion, he's going rather overboard in trying to give his storytelling the feminine touch in the Merrily Watkins books. A fact that - at first - comes over as something that you just have to get used to, but after 14 books starts getting rather tiresome.

This, combined with the very low key and monotone narration by Emma Powell, simply makes it hard to keep interested in the story and very easy to fall asleep. Because of the monotone drone and the very small variations in voice, I had great trouble to find the point in the story that I actually picked up consciously, before continuing to listen. It almost sound like an old spinster whispering gossips in your ears.

What could Phil Rickman have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

The main characters start coming over as a couple of weak, unbalanced and - in the case of Jane - deliberately always contrary persons. This makes - to me as a 54 year old man - the whole thing sound like a somewhat over-driven try to write out of a feminine perspective. It does not feel natural anymore.

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Emma Powell?

    Emma Powell when she's awake?

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Not that I can think of. Felt like an uninspired try to keep the MW series going, far past the point at which the author stopped being interested.

    "Phil Rickman- the Border's secrets"

    I love Phil Rickman's writing.
I can thoroughly recommend reading the Merrily Watkins series
This latest episode meets the usual high standards.
Phil reminds us of the secret and hidden ways of all societies while giving us a cast of excellent characters.
I would give 5***** in all categories but I didn't feel that Frannie Bliss got the fab Scouse voice he deserved

Waiting for the next one so will probably reread all of the others!
