Publisher's summary

In the delightful Cotswold village of Carsely, the air is heady with romance. Agatha Raisin is convinced that the new vet has taken a shine to her. But before she can get anywhere, handsome Dr. Paul Bladen is accidentally killed while attending to Lord Pendlebury’s horse. So was it really an accident? All the evidence points that way, but the circumstances are decidedly suspicious....

Good Book, Disappointing Narrator

Agatha Raisin is back in the village of Carsely, after spending a holiday abroad. She's determined to snag the heart of neighbor, James Lacey. However when James doesn't return her advances, Agatha catches the eye of the new vet, Paul Bladen. However before a romance can truly begin, Paul Bladen, turns up dead. Despite it being ruled as an accident, Agatha is certain that it is murder, and drags James Lacey along to help investigate. Agatha hopes to not only make James fall in love with her, but solve the murder too!

Oh Agatha, how I love thee! You are spunky, speak your mind and are behaving like a boy-crazy middled aged woman! It's impossible not to like Agatha with her zest for life. This time she has romance on the mind as she chases vet, Paul Bladen, and retired Colonel, James Lacey. Of course when it doesn't go her way she stamps her feet and becomes more determined.

This series has such a great colorful cast of characters, and it was great to see many of them returning in the second book. I would have liked to have seen more of the Carsely Ladies Society, but I'm sure they will be popping up in the next book too.

This audiobook flew by in a torrent of enjoyable goings on in the village, as Agatha and James try to solve the murder. Before I knew it the murder was solved and the audio was finished, leaving me wanting to grab the next one.

The first book in this series was narrated by Penelope Keith, and this second one was narrated by Diana Bishop. I really wished they hadn't changed narrators. Where Penelope was great and expressed all the color of the characters of Carsely, Diana fell flat for me. At times I had a hard time distinguishing the voices and it was really the story that pulled me through to the end of the book, with no help from the narrator. If you are a cozy mystery fan, this is a such a great series and I intend to continue on. The next in the series is narrated by Penelope Keith, and I can't wait!

Really? A novel novel.

This "mystery" is about a lovesick and very horny retired lady in her mid-50's who bumbles into solving murders that appear to be accidental deaths. The quality of narration exactly matches that of the novel. I awarded two stars because I feel pity for both the book and the narrator.

A Delightful Short Romp!

I veered away from my usual serious mystery fare to listen to the free-to-prime members book -- "Agatha Raisin and the Quiche of Death." It was just a light, enjoyable easy listen -- with the central character quite the character! So that convinced to me buy and download book #2 -- AR and the Vicious Vet -- and it was just as much fun.

Agatha Raisin is a 50-something retired PR exec who retired to the Cotswalds and has a hard time settling in to the relaxed pace. But give her a mystery, especially a murder, to solve and she goes after it whole heartedly. The book has some truly laugh-out-loud moments when Agatha's best of intentions go awry. The narration in these books is superb and my only complaint is that they are mostly around six hours in length. Under $10, but still, a bit pricey for the time you get in return I think.

Typical M. C. Beaton

A string of somewhat disjointed incidents relating to a brutal murder and Agatha and James attempts to solve it.

I liked the little snippets of insights into Agatha's mind and thought process. She is a very silly woman and much too easily led on by her own imagination and desires.

Interesting characters. Rambling plot. When you think the story has ended it goes on with new twists and turns.

Recommended for light listening when you need a distraction.

Agatha Your Wonderful!!!!

I love this story. Agatha's adventure in the ladies room, made me laugh so hard; passing motorist thought I was insane. None of the characters can steal a sene from Agatha. She's inquisitive as Miss Marple with the tenacity of Kinsey Millhone. All readers over the age of 45 will enjoy the way she stumbles into solving crimes. CSI look out 😉

Who wants a pathetic heroine?

Agatha Raisin is pathetic and desperate, desperate for a man, any man it seems. I just can't get past that and into the story. The first Agatha Raisin mystery was cute. Agatha was confident, honest and assertive. Now she is just pathetic, a few faults are fine, but who wants a pathetic heroine; it is fiction after all, give me someone to admire.

Agatha's antics make me laugh out loud!

If you love the dry, iconic English wit and dream of living in the Cotswolds and completely mixing your manners and solving whodunits (that really are good mysteries) you will have great fun with Agatha. If you don't long for anything above, I still feel you'll have a great time! My favorite light reading out of hundreds of audio books.

Cats, Comedy, and Cunning in the Cotswolds

I laughed out loud at Agatha's antics in the ladies room in the pub, and then was highly satisfied as I listened to the colonel's quick witted resolution to situation . . . a quirky and sometimes self-absorbed bunch they are in the Cotswolds, making for an interesting tale . . . When the new vet in town turns up dead in Lord Pendlebury’s horse stable . . . on first blush, it's thought to be accidental . . . but something just doesn't set right with Agatha . . . or her handsome neighbor, retired Colonel James Lacey . . . so they together set out to do some sleuthing . . . to the horror of Detective Bill Wong . . . this is a fun and entertaining yarn, and I found myself liking Agatha more and more . . . she's grumpy, she's emotional, she's hopeful, she has a sense of humor, she loves (and abhors) the women of the Carsely Ladies Society, and she forgives and moves on . . . She's highly attached to those darn cats! Somewhere in her busy retired life she finds time to solve murders . . .

If You're In the Mood for a Fun Cozy

When I want a light read to offset heavy reads, I turn to a number of favorite cozy characters, including Agatha Raisin. I don't read them in order, because wherever I reenter Agatha's life, I know it will be fun and easy to catch up. The story wasn't my favorite, the villain being a bit far-fetched, but I always enjoy irascible Agatha trying to lure James Lacey into her web.
