Publisher's Summary

Penelope Keith stars as Agatha Raisin in two more full-cast BBC Radio 4 dramas.

After a lifetime spent in public relations, the drinking and smoking one-woman dynamo that is Agatha Raisin struggles to adapt to life in a quiet Cotswold village. Penelope Keith stars as Agatha Raisin, Miss Marple with attitude, in two full-cast dramas based on the best-selling books by M. C. Beaton.

"The Quiche of Death": In her first extended radio appearance, Agatha Raisin determines to make her mark by winning the local baking competition. When the judge is poisoned by her efforts, she investigates and uncovers a web of extra-marital sex and pastry-based favours.

"The Vicious Vet": A handsome vet is found stabbed with a syringe full of tranquiliser. Was it an accident or did someone put him to sleep? Agatha sets off on a tale of beastly behaviour and animal passion.

First time with this author and this character

And I loved it. I hadn't caught that this was a performance versus an audiobook, so I was taken aback during the first few minutes. But I enjoyed myself thoroughly and can't wait to hear the next one! I see the next one is audio, not performance. I'm slighly disappointed but I'm sure since Penelope Keith is the narrator I'll be happy. I highly recommend this series, this narator and this performance.

Dramatized Radio Production, Not Unabridged Book

My rating is not a comment on the well-respected actors in this performance, it's a reflection of my disappointment when I realized this recording is not the unabridged book read by a single narrator but a short (approx 1 hour) dramatized production for radio. Now I know to check the file details before buying!

Penelope Keith

Penelope Brings Agatha Raisin to life, I enjoy hearing her so much I only wish they didn't change her out of the audio books. I won't buy any more audio books until they bring her back.

I am a huge fan of Agatha BUT

This is a very short production that doesn't do either book justice. Much of the plot lines have been changed and the most hilarious escapade Agatha has had (and I have read them all) does not occur. This is perhaps satisfying as a radio production if you don't know Agatha, but you will be disappointed if you are at all familiar with the Raisin series.

Always a fun listen

I like the characters that M.C. Beaton creates and I do like to listen to them frequently between some of the much longer much more involved mysteries.

Extremely enjoyable set of 3 short paragraphs in the life of Agatha Raisin. A thoroughly enjoyable "feel good" listen.

No audio with this purchase, but sold as audible.

Would you try another book written by M. C. Beaton or narrated by Penelope Keith?

The first book was really enjoyable, Penelope Keith was brilliant I listen to it from a different audio download, that is why I purchased this audio book, as I enjoyed Miss Keith's potential of the character's. But can not download this purchase. Reason given in additional comments column.

What was most disappointing about M. C. Beaton’s story?

Can not give an answer, reason in additional comments column.

Would you be willing to try another one of Penelope Keith’s performances?

Penelope Keith gives a remarkable portrayal of all the characters, she portrays each character differently and you can really imagine the character. First book reference.

What character would you cut from Agatha Raisin: The Quiche of Death and the Vicious Vet (Dramatisation)?

Would not cut any from The Quiche of Death, can not comment on The Vicious Vet.

Any additional comments?

Audio books should not be sold under the pretext that it contains audio. The reason given no audio available at this time, does not solve the problem that I have purchased a book that I cannot listen too. I am a very disappointed customer.

I loved it

Would you listen to Agatha Raisin: The Quiche of Death and the Vicious Vet (Dramatisation) again? Why?

Yes. This is the start of how Agatha moved to the country and got started as a detective etc. I had read a recent book and wanted to go back to the beginning.

What other book might you compare Agatha Raisin: The Quiche of Death and the Vicious Vet (Dramatisation) to, and why?

No idea.

Have you listened to any of Penelope Keith’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Penelope Keith is wonderful. She has a beautiful voice herself; but was able to do other voices too. Very professional.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Laugh in some places but it's more gripping.

Any additional comments?

These are the radio plays; with Malcolm Sinclair adding to the great cast. Love these and hope there are loads more.

Murder and mayhem!

Penelope Keith on top form as the meddling Agatha aided by the long suffering James (in the second tale) in two abridged dramatisations of M.C.Beatons' early Agatha Raisin novels.
Well performed and an absolute joy to listen to.
All too short but so worthwhile! Thoroughly recommended.

Fantastic

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

An easy listen murder mystery without the over explicit traits of some modern detective stories.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Hard to say as all the characters have a role to play in bringing village life and the stories to life.

What does Penelope Keith bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

An excellent dramatisation and Penelope Keith sounds perfect for Agatha.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

It is rare for me to listen to a book in one sitting but I did with this one.

Any additional comments?

Well worth a listen.

Entertaining.

The radio adaptations were my first introduction to the Agatha Raisin series - they are quite well adapted, often amusing and usually well cast. These two stories are adapted from the first two novels in the series, with each novel being shortened to two 30 minute episodes. If you've enjoyed the series on the radio, these are a great little listen for shorter car journeys or the Saturday morning chores.
