Publisher's Summary

In the year 1878 I took my degree of Doctor of Medicine of the University of London, and proceeded to Netley to go through the course prescribed for surgeons in the army. Having completed my studies there, I was duly attached to the Fifth Northumberland Fusiliers as Assistant Surgeon. The regiment was stationed in India at the time, and before I could join it, the second Afghan war had broken out. On landing at Bombay, I learned that my corps had advanced through the passes, and was already deep in the enemy's country. I followed, however, with many other officers who were in the same situation as myself, and succeeded in reaching Candahar in safety, where I found my regiment, and at once entered upon my new duties.

    "Classic Sherlock Holmes!"

I very much enjoyed listening to this Sherlock Holmes mystery. Arthur Conan Doyle was a very talented author and the Keith Higinbotham did the performance justice. I found this listen to comforting (I remember listening to mystery theatre growing up) and intriguing as I was not familiar with this story. I was voluntarily provided with this review copy audiobook at no charge by the author, narrator, and or publisher.

    "Good audiobook"
If you could sum up A Study in Scarlet in three words, what would they be?

The reading was original matching the to this classic story, the plot was good performed and the characters had a vivid intonation.

What was one of the most memorable moments of A Study in Scarlet?

The beginning and end were equally very good performed.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes,although nearly everyone knows the story it is still an audiobook that you can listen in a sitting.

    Any additional comments?

    Highly recommended.

    Any additional comments?

I love Sherlock Holmes mysteries! This is the first appearance of Sherlock and Watson, who would become two of the most famous characters in popular fiction.

    Excellent narration by Keith Higinbotham.

I received this audio-book free for an honest review by the author, narrator, or publisher. Thank you!!!

"The story of Holmes and Watson's 1st adventure"

Doyle created an amazing group of characters. This is the story of how Watson and Holmes meet. The story of their first adventure and how Holmes comes to his amazing deductions and observations. This first tale is a twisted one that will lead you on a long journey to revelation of truth. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.

    "Amazing stuff"
Where does A Study in Scarlet rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

In the top 50 for sure

Have you listened to any of Keith Higinbotham’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    NO, this was my first

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me happy, as it is a classic

    Any additional comments?

If you know the Sherlock series nothing new will come out of reading this. However, I love the recording as it switches accents smoothly, and sticks to the original storyline. voicing Sherlock He has gotten a mix of what makes Sherlock, Sherlock. but also does his own thing.
    I Really enjoyed the recording.

"A bit dated but a lot of fun"
What made the experience of listening to A Study in Scarlet the most enjoyable?

A bit dated but a lot of fun. I received this audiobook free in exchange for an unbiased review. I did thoroughly enjoy the narration and get a lot more detail from listening to the book that I did when I read it years ago

    Story
"The best telling of "A Study in Scarlet" ever."

First off, I received this audiobook free from the narrator in return for an honest review.

I have enjoyed Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories for many years. Recently I started listening to audiobooks while doing chores or driving. I have found that no matter how good the story, the narrator makes or breaks an audiobook. This narrator is great. He really brings the characters to life.

What made the experience of listening to A Study in Scarlet the most enjoyable?

Since I have read the book, being able to listen to it really made it come to life.

What other book might you compare A Study in Scarlet to and why?

I can't think of any other book to compare this one to.

What does Keith Higinbotham bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

With the narration, it seems as though there is more detail than was initially caught in the reading of the book.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    No

    "The original consulting detective."

The two heroes that sparked so many spin offs in their first adventure. The story has aged well and will always be a classic for anyone and everyone to enjoy. Keith Higinbotham did a great job in narrating this story and I would recommend it to all Sherlock Holmes fans.

    Story
    "Disappointing story with good narration"
What would have made A Study in Scarlet better?

The biggest issue I had with the book was the sudden jump from London to Utah. I think more exploration of Watson and Holmes, who we are just being introduced to, would have improved the story. As it is, you don't see them interact much or do much actual investigation. There were some good moments, but not enough real development of the characters or mystery. I think a shift to focus more on those aspects of the story would have improved it greatly.

What was most disappointing about Arthur Conan Doyle’s story?

The main drawback in the jump to Utah was the attack on the Latter-day Saint faith. I don't mind religion or religious people being used in a story, nor do I think they must always be presented in a positive light, but I felt this was taking things to extremes at times. I did not finish the story (I only had about an hour of listening time left) in large part due to this. It just was not something that I personally wanted to hear, nor did I find the characters it was following at this point very interesting.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

I really enjoyed the narration of the first part of the novel, for the most part. I found the accents for a lot of the characters in the second part somewhat lacking. The voicing of Lucy in particular always threw me out of the story. I don't know what, exactly, did this, I just found the voicing for her character off somehow.

    Any additional comments?

I decided not to finish this book once I was nearing the end, for reasons mentioned previously. I would like to try more Sherlock Holmes tales, however. I would also really like to try more audio from this narrator because I overall really enjoyed his voice and reading style.
